Megasquirt?

So, after talking to Delta, I'd like to get engine management to run stage II cams when I swap the engine. I do not plan on turbocharging the car so a WRX ECU is unwanted. I'm not really sure if a stock EJ25 ECU would run stage II cams either.

I'd like to keep this build inexpensive, so I keep coming across Megasquirt. It's pretty cheap (complete MSII kits are about $250 plus wideband) and building the box and splicing it to the wiring harness seems daunting, but I'm willing to do it. The thing I'm curious about is getting a start up tune just to get the car started and if this build will become non-daily drivable. Am I in over my head or what? I'd like to just get your guy's opinion on this.

ive heard good things about megasquirt. i thought it was more for mopar and mitsu apps. i know there are alot of scooby ppl that have had luck with link em and hydra nemesis em. i really doint think you ahve to have a em to run stage 2 cams.

I've used MegaSquirt on and off pretty much since it came out, back when you had to put it all together yourself and there was nothing out there for basemapping. If you aren't VERY comfortable with wiring and tuning, don't use it. I prefer not to use it unless I absolutely must, and ONLY on cars with no other option but a full standalone. Don't try to learn to tune by wiring up your car and MS, chances are you'll have a non-running car that you eventually give up on. Other systems like Hydra I have also used a bit and I would definitely recommend the higher dollar systems, but you pay a lot more (and you get what you pay for).

The main thing is, talk to who will be tuning your car, and find out what they are comfortable using (or if they WILL NOT use certain systems).

What I plan on using for my build is Perfect Power SMT-6, Although it will soon be replaced with the SMT-8, some places still sell it like RalliTEK. I haven't looked elsewhere yet but I'm hoping to find a better price. http://www.perfectpower.com/products/piggyback.asp#smt6

I've considered other EMS, but they are all around 500-1000 dollars (if not more) and they usually do not include the price of wideband (not that much really). With Megasquirt, I'd be able to have a full engine management system (including the price of wideband) for about 300 sum dollars. Plus, I'd be able to tune anything. But the thing I'm starting to get really worried about , like Tom said, is basemapping. I can't seem to find anyone who has Megasquirted a NA EJ25 so it might suck to be a trailblazer...

Reason, can you find a price for the perfect power system, because I sure can't. If I could get a price, I might reconsider.

HOLY CRAP!!! I actually jumped out of my seat when I saw this. This looks like the system to go for to be safe and reliable while running stage II cams; and the price is very right. Reason, if you manage to get these for sale, keep us posted.

The SMT6 can be had for around $250 used on nabisco. I have always heard that it is the best piggyback ECU for Subarus.
