I had a post before about how my front seals started leaking after I changed my rear main… (and the rear is still leaking too..)
I started my timing belt job last night and found it’s only the crankshaft seal leaking, but it’s leaking pretty bad and it wasn’t leaking before I did the rear main. I’ve been thinking about it a lot because there’s a common element between these two leaks which is the crank shaft. So either it is some great coincidence… or…
I’ve been thinking that there’s a lot of tolerance build up when I bolt up the drive plate to the crank shaft, then the torque converter to the drive plate, since in both cases on the drive plate they are just holes in sheet metal. There aren’t any splines or anything to line it up so it’s just a matter of the tolerance on the drive plate holes that determine how centered the drive plate is to the crank, which ultimately determines how centered the torque converter and transmission are to the rotation of the crankshaft.
This might be a little far fetched, or just me over analyzing it so just need you guys to convince me that’s the case.. .But would it be possible that because the drive plate wasn’t perfectly centered to the crank shaft due to the tolerances on the holes that it’s “oscillating” or getting some type of play since it’s not perfectly central to the transmission? Which in turn would cause the front and rear to go up and down alternating as it is rotating… breaking the rear and front seals causing them to leak everywhere…
Just a note that the rotation of the crank pulley appeared normal when I watched it.
