View Full Version : Play in RH camshaft

I went to change the o-ring on the camshaft support plate and noticed that it wouldnt' sit flush with the engine anymore because the new o-ring caused a gap

I didn't think much of it then, but today i notcied that my camshaft has some forward/backward play in it... if i take the o-ring out, and let the cap sit flush against the motor i still get a little bit of play, not much but still some..

Is this normal?

And how do i get this thing to sit flush with th eo-ring in there? I only torqued it down to 12 ft-lb per the manual

oh.. think I found it... maybe the camshaft support is worn.

thats strange though i never heard of this being an issue..

wasn't the camshaft support, i took the one out of my 96 and swapped it over.. still getting play about .8 mm of play..

Any ideas what could cause this?

worn camshaft caps, worn camshaft, incorrect torque on the caps

I guess it is the camshaft then. :cry:

It's torqued to spec and i've tried a cap from a different car that has no play. Any harm driving it as is? I've never seen the cams, but i'm guessing the lobes are wide enough that it's not gonna miss the bucket...

must of been over torqued? guess its either the cam or head

Hmm how would over torquing the cap cause that? if anything i would think that torquing it down more should push the cap in further allowing less play?

So if i understand the correctly, the front of the camshaft should be prevented by moving forward because the journal has a larger diameter lip that get stopped by the head, and on the back side it's prevented from moving back by the camshaft cap?
