alright i've torn my dash apart numerous times now, checking the bulbs, ordering, checking again, going to radio shack, building my own, :smt017 and now i think i've got most of the bulbs covered for what your going to want to replace on your car, either going with the traditional colors or changing the colors of the bulbs to do something a little different. i got everything through :
www.superbrightleds.com and these are under the 12 v car bulbs, twist lock, & component bulbs.
and it goes like this : (you'll have to pick your colors)
PRODUCT # QTY. ()
* for the dash light bulbs - odometer & time/temp - basically it is a #74 light bulb in a twist lock circuit, but it might be easier to buy these from superbright, unless you want to buy individual sockets, then you could try different colors in other spots (same bulbs as all of the other instrument panel illumination bulbs # T1.5-xHP (2)
* for the dash/instrument illumination bulb - basically the bulb is a 194 or a 194/168 wedge base # WLED-x4 (4)
I'm going to be trying some 9 led bulbs for the dash lights too.
* for hvac / heater illumination - these are twist lock base bulbs - NeoWedge 4mm, led or smd #NEO-4x (3) for the hvac, one of the bulbs is shorter in length so i used 2 regular NEO-4x and 1 NEO4-xHP - which is an smd led
* for the ashtray / accessory ring / key light ring - #74 bulb - # 74-xHP3 (3)
* for the dome lights & map lights = #DE3175 / door lights = #DE3021 - 5 bulbs in total #3022-x9 or # 3022-CWHP2 (white) (5) - i used the #3022-CWHP2 for my dome lights
* the rear interior light for the back compartment is the #921 style bulb
* the glove box light and the vanity lights for the sunvisors use the # 74xHP3 bulbs
* for the fog light switch and the cruise control switch i found some led's that should be the right size, but will have to use the old light sockets - i've attempted these bulbs, but they burn out instantly, and are not working. so i'll spend some time trying to build some other ones, eventually.. i found these bulbs under the 'component led's' and they are 3 mm bulbs - # RL3-W3030 & #RL3-B2030 (4)
~ you'll have to figure out what your color is and check ur part #'s when you order, but it is very painless, and i got my stuff in about a week, bulbs are anywhere from 79 cents to $9 for a bulb but depends on what kind of color, style, brightness of led or size of led u want. just read their explanation about the intensity / brightness of the bulbs and u might have to experiment like i am still in the process of.
*i hope this helps the BE / BH guys get some new dash lights. i'm very happy with what i've done so far, and i'll continue to edit the write up on this procedure. :smt023

Looking forward to your write up. I'm still trying to have the courage to crack open the gauge cluster haha. But I so badly want to get rid of that green glow....yuck!
Quick question...maybe its just me. But I can't find the product numbers on the website...I'm probably looking in the wrong place.
Edit: Ugh, I'm so dumb I figured it out lol.

alright, now there not perfect, but at least in the right order now, the first page is before pictures with the green illumination, and the hvac is white because i removed the green condoms for those bulbs just to see what white would look like. basically the begining is taking everything apart, showing some of the tricky stuff, but it eventually progresses and at the bottom is a completed picture of the dash with blue illumination.....

What you need for the dash:
2 of these at $2.79 (http://www.superbrightleds.com/cgi-bin/store/index.cgi?action=DispPage&Page2Disp=%2Fspecs%2F74_t15.htm)
4 of these at $1.59/$2.59 (http://www.superbrightleds.com/cgi-bin/store/index.cgi?action=DispPage&Page2Disp=%2Fspecs%2FWLED-x4.htm)
you can look up the other ones yourself http://www.superbrightleds.com just look at the numbers in red

under some of the installation pics i put the part numbers for tha bulbs. at the top of the topic the bulb numbers are written in red. there are only 2 different bulbs for the cluster, 6 bulbs in total if u only want to do ur gauges. not including the turn signal bulbs, or warning lites. when u order make sure u specify the color u want.

yes in my understanding of the 2 for $2.79 one is for the odometer and one is for the time/temp, and the 4 are for the rest of the gauges.

Awesome write-up. Thank you. I've already done the rest of the dash in red using bulb condoms, but hadn't gotten to the gauges yet because I was thinking about doing the method where you sand the green film off of the back of the gauge face. But since the LGT is our DD and the WRX is up on jack stands getting the trans rebuilt, I started on the WRX gauges. The sanding method is a PITA. But I have to finish it on the WRX, but the LGT won't be getting the same treatment if avoidable.
blackstar-You didn't sand the gauge face at all did you? I assume the LED's are bright enough to shine through.
Oh and for those who are wondering, its about $12+s&h to do just the gauge cluster.
i so want to do this, but i suck at DIY things .. :smt022

Can't do white. It will be a teal look to it from the green backing film I believe. I could be wrong, But 99% sure.

Matty is right on, I'll get my pictures together soon to show the differences between colors, the white bulbs make a teal color, because the backing of the gauge covers are green. The only way to get them white is to remove needles, sand down the back of the gauge overlays then color to your desired effect. *******

I just replaced most of the bulbs in my dash.
Speedo/tach/fuel/temperature: 4x T10 5Led
Digital AC: 4x T3 LED
Glovebox, ashtray, 12v outlet: 3x T5 LED
Trunk light: 1x T10
Dome light, maplights, courtisy ligths and visor lights: 7x 3175 Festoon 31mm.
Also got sick of the green light in the turn signal indicators (in dash) so i put 2x T5's in them.
Got 5x prewired DIY LEDs that i installed in the pocket underneath the CD player, cup holder and glovebox underneath the armrest.

I want to do white LED's but im thinking its going to make the gauges greener than what they are. Would it show up white? Or green?

I have a JDM car, the face of the gauges seem to be a bit different, I assume that the rear is the same. I think I will buy the same blue ones listed in this thread :) I have an apexi boost gauge that is in blue at night, so would be good if the other panels matched.

Does anyone have the part numbers for a BD Dash and hvac controls and how many are needed? Also for the fog, defrost, cruise buttons. I would like to order before disassembling the dash for stainless bezel install.

Yeah has anyone found out which lights are needed for the cruise control and fog light switches? As of now, both of those lights are burnt out for me, and I really wanna replace them.

The cruise and fogs and defrost and emergency flashers on a BD are just the T1 / Neo3 style from Superbrightleds.com (http://Superbrightleds.com/). I used white and amber when I did mine. The Neo3 bulbs are a little big for the sockets in any Subaru so a bit of sanding on the base make them fit better. Also the retaining hook is a little big so I trimmed the bump with a knife.
On another note, I haven't been to Superbrightleds.com (http://Superbrightleds.com/) site in quite some time and it is way better than it used to be.

Major props to "blackstar" for this thread, it was super helpful, especially the bulb # breakdown.
Here is my result with the blue bulbs, it looks like it came this way, I love it, and it matches perfect with my Eclipse Navi. All my interior lighting is now LED, as well as the license plate. Totally updates the feel of the car, and this weekend an '06 LGT 3-spoke steering wheel will complete the interior for me.

What bulbs did you use for the indicators? I see you used T5s but which ones in particular? I ask because if you put T5s into search on superbrightleds it comes up with several different types :-?

The T5 bulbs are just the sizes of the base for the #168/194/912 bulbs. The 168/194 bulbs are much smaller in size compared to the 912's. The 4 bulbs for the Gauges are the #194 bulbs. The other two bulbs to change the gauge illumination are the T1.5 bulbs I referred to. If you go to Superbrightleds.com -->just select LED Car Bulbs.
You will need:
4 = Miniature Wedge Base Bulbs
194/168/921 Type - Mini-Wedge Base Socket
2 = Instrument Cluster and Gauge
T1.5 Base --------->#PC74
or just type in there search : #194 for the 4 main bulbs and #PC74 for all of the other bulbs
The #PC74 bulbs are the same as the T1.5's I used.
You can use the #PC74 bulbs for--> Turn signal indicators / High Beam / BRAKE / Check Engine / ABS / Airbag / Battery / Oil lights, just depends on what you want replaced

So, I did not read through this whole thread to see if any one has come up with anything definite for the cruse/ fog switches but I have found something that works. The NEO3-x bulbs kinda work. They are not a perfect fit in the fact that they do not twist and lock in like the stock sockets do. They are a very tight fit however, tight enough that after I forced them into their place I am not afraid that they will fall out. This is a viable choice for anyone looking for LED lights for the cruise/fog switches.
Here is a link to the bulb that I ordered, the 3mm (T-1) is the size you need.

They sure are tight!! The problem I had with these bulbs is they were so tight I couldn't remove them (damn polarised bulbs!!!!!) and ending up having to pull the whole fog light switch apart. End result 3 wrecked led bulbs and now have no lighting in my dash or HVAC :!: :?: :smt022 Hoping like hell it's just a fuse :smt013

haha yep I had to take the switch apart to turn them around but I didn't ruin the bulbs. I also ended up blowing the fuse lol. The fuse is in the the fuse box to the left of the steering wheel, you have to remove the little storage pocket to get to it. Then it is a 10amp fuse, the very bottom middle I believe. The diagram calls it the "illumination" fuse.

I found that when I did my LEDs in the 97 that the sanding drum on the Dremel was my best friend. I just spun it around the base a few times to make them a little smaller and I cut the little bump off the side attaching things to allow the LED to turn in. Anyone who has seen the LEDs and the original bulbs will know what I mean.
I also used the FSM illumination circuit diagram and a 9 volt battery with a pigtail attached to check that the LEDs were installed correctly at the dining room table, long before they got to the car.

Just an FYI, these dashlight LED's burn out after 1 year. My HVAC are still gong strong, as are my puddle lights, but the cluster I've had all 4 go after about 1 year each. SuperbrightLEDs will ship a replacement, but it's kind of a PITA. For me the look is worth the effort, but buyer beware

Hi,
What are the LED bulbs for the turn signals and all the warning lights? Also what are the correct fitting fog/cruise LED bulbs?
Thanks much!!
alright i've torn my dash apart numerous times now, checking the bulbs, ordering, checking again, going to radio shack, building my own, :smt017 and now i think i've got most of the bulbs covered for what your going to want to replace on your car, either going with the traditional colors or changing the colors of the bulbs to do something a little different. i got everything through :
www.superbrightleds.com and these are under the 12 v car bulbs, twist lock, & component bulbs.
and it goes like this : (you'll have to pick your colors)
PRODUCT # QTY. ()
* for the dash light bulbs - odometer & time/temp - basically it is a #74 light bulb in a twist lock circuit, but it might be easier to buy these from superbright, unless you want to buy individual sockets, then you could try different colors in other spots (same bulbs as all of the other instrument panel illumination bulbs # T1.5-xHP (2)
* for the dash/instrument illumination bulb - basically the bulb is a 194 or a 194/168 wedge base # WLED-x4 (4)
* for the ashtray / accessory ring / key light ring - #74 bulb - # 74-xHP3 (3)
* for the dome lights & map lights = #DE3175 / door lights = #DE3021 - 5 bulbs in total #3022-x9 or # 3022-CWHP2 (white) (5) - i used the #3022-CWHP2 for my dome lights
:smt023

Just getting g into this in my BD. But also wondering if I can put LEDs in the instrument cluster and HVAC b/c of the dimming feature on that circuit. . . :smt017
alright, now there not perfect, but at least in the right order now, the first page is before pictures with the green illumination, and the hvac is white because i removed the green condoms for those bulbs just to see what white would look like. basically the begining is taking everything apart, showing some of the tricky stuff, but it eventually progresses and at the bottom is a completed picture of the dash with blue illumination.....
