yesterday I was driving to get gas. one way was about 16 miles so when it got to this level I just went to the nearest station after the stop to the bank.

I'm sure the light would of came on by then?

I was stopped at the light when I took the picture.

That is a very common problem. Its either your gauge or your fuel sending unit.

In my case it is the gauge cluster, I have a 97 LGT cluster that reports 100% full tank and drops to the -5% (the needle sits on the peg) and I still have 15% fuel in my tank.

In another situation a friend with a 97 LGT wagon had the same issue as me and found that replacing a 98+ gauge cluster solved the inaccurate readings.

Or it is just the light in that case go change it, takes a few minutes.

Nope, you still have 4 gal in the tank there.

I can drive to work for 3 days like that (6mile commute) and not see a light until the 4th day. The fuel gauge in these cars drops quickly and then slows down. Put a 5gal tank in your car and keep driving until the light comes on.

yeah anything on the older Subaru's under 1/2 tank it seems to drop super fast.

I always hated the fuel sender in my 95 impreza sometimes it would work right or sometime it would think it's empty..

glad I never decided to replace it since I got rid of the car 2 years after that.

Mine used to be reallllllly flaky, but it has gotten better (crazy thing).

My fuel light rarely ever comes on though, and only if the gas is very low. Also, do you really only get 160 miles to a tank? or do you not reset your tripometer with fill-ups.

I get 160 doing 85% city driving why?

coming back from Bristol, RI I got 263 from the tank which gave me 29mpg it was my first long distance trip with the car. I always calculate my fuel mileage and reset my trip.

I think when I pull the gauges (I still have the screws taken out) I will just check the bulb but just thinking about it when I had my 03 Forester XS coming back from Canada my fuel level was about the same on the legacy and the light never came on.

I just got gas anyways since I had about 40 miles left.

Oh yeah... long trips in the legacy are going to suck ass these seats hurt after just 40 min of driving, no lumbar support what-so-ever

when I get enough cash seats are going to go!

i have to disagree i have had no problems on long trips ~6-12hrs a day (tristate) didn't have a bit of back issues

not to go completely off topic *thread steal* anyone know the testing method for the gauge and sending unit, i've got the p0463 code from time to time, it comes then goes away when i have the code the gas gauge drops to empty and stays there, and my idiot light has work in forever (put 15 gal. in so i was really empty on a 14.9 gal tank)

lol trust me man if you saw my driver's seat you would be like wtf is that lumpy thing in the seat? lol... I think the foam was bunched up or something..

Just driving to Bristol, R.I. where the meet was had my lower back hurting since my car has no lumbar support at all.

Also a 14.9 gal tank? I think you mean 15.9 Gal.

hmm that's interesting I hear long right hand turns like a curve can cause that but I've never seen it happen.

being an incredibly broke college student this semester, I've had my gas gauge on the needle several times. Essentially the light will come on with about 2 gallons left. Which still lets you have another 40 or more miles to go.
