already been to Tigerjapanese.com and risingsunengines.com, the first of the 2 has yet to get back to me about whether the engines have the EGR pipe tapped and have Active Valve Control Systems, the latter's price is above what I intended to pay, but I'm willing to if I cant find any other good places.

so, anyone have any places they know of that are both good and reliable?

what are you looking for used or rebuilt? for rebuilt i would go with maxwell power here in washington. he has been rebuilding subaru motors for years and putting them in airplanes.

specifically just a replacement EJ25D for my 2.5GT, I like that site you gave me KAG and the price is something i can afford, similar to tigerjapanese.com, do you know if the position for the EGR pipe is tapped on those blocks?

The ej25d's are the ones we usually get, and they've always come tapped for the EGR pipe. I'm sure if you ask them to make sure, they'll do it.

heh well i just made an idiot of myself, I was trying to explain to my dad, who is a machinist but once was a engine/trans specialist, what the egr pipe was and how the JDM ver. did not have a tapped hole for it, and as i was explaining it he started to chuckle and then proceeded to school me in the ways of engine mechanics and said that he can do it no problem, so ya, that solves this topic i suppose lol. The engine should be ordered and in the car at least before the NE wicked big meet.

Well long as you can bring extra tools cuz im short on them then thats fine, mostly just need 1/2in drive, extension, couple long neck 12mm sockets, a 16mm socket for the PS pulley, and something to keep the pulley from movin, i got everything else i need (i think) lol

sorry to bring this up but can you guys tell me whats the difference on JDM EJ25 and our cars? im putting it on my subbie legacy 198 outback wagon...
i got a quote from engine builder: 950$ for pistons, rings ,bearings gasket, seals, timing belt and other stuff to rebuild my engine...(piston is shot)
LABOR is $1100 to dissassemble the engine and doing all the work cleaning, honing, micropolishing and stuff and assembling.... so total would be labor and parts: $ 2000 for a full rebuilt oem... thats a lot of money..

so im debating to just replace my engine and just get JDM ones replace timing belt, waterpump, front and rear main seal and call it a day....

go to tigerjapanese.com and order from them, its 775 shipped, the only thing you need to replace from ours to theirs is the intake manifold, and you also need to drill and tap the EGR pipe entry point on the cylinder head (or just swap the head if its still good) and viola, all done.

Those prices he gave you seem way too high for a job like that, I was only quoted half of what you were quoted for and my issue was much worse (blown piston shot into the bore breaking the valves when the connecting rod snapped which in turn beat the snot out of my crankshaft)

that isnt entirely true... i didnt need to swap intake manifolds to a usdm one and she runs fine,

also, the engines from tigerjapanese.com are not egr tapped so yes, you'll need to tap it if you have an egr.. its also $550 for the engine and i think $250 flat for shipping... thats what it was for me..

some sensors in the jdm engine arent used and the placement of some components are different.. one of the ignition sensors are on the passenger side so you may have to lengthen the wire to make it reach...

thats all i can think of...

I used my USDM wires and everything matched up fine for me, no real issues.

idk how you can use the jdm manifold though since it doesnt have the housing position for the EGR valve, and ya, 550+225=775, i was just rounding them up for him

anywho, ya, it really isnt a big issue, if you want more info, PM decke48, he's bery knowledgeable when it comes to the subaru engines :smt023

I know I'm a little late but I just did this a couple weeks ago.

1. You have to tap the DRIVER side head for the EGR. It's a M16 x 1.5 tap. There's already a place for it, it's just blocked at the back so you drill that out. Start with a small drill then work your way up. Then tap the ENTIRE port that's on the JDM head. Voila, done, simple. Takes a whole 5 min.

2. the JDM engines vary in regards to how they mount to the transmission. My USDM engine mounted via 4 studs and 4 bolts for a total of 8 mounting points but my JDM engine only had 4 mounting points. 2 studs on the bottom and 2 bolts on the top. This made a little problem for me because the lower starter bolt didn't have anywhere to mount to so I had to tape the transmission side of where the lower starter bolt is.

That way the start is properly in place. Again, took 5 min. Tapped with a M12 x 1.5 tap.

3. I would not use the JDM intake manifold, things are placed in different areas and what not.. it's easier to remove your USDM intake manifold (8 bolts) and unclip all the sensors. You have two on the flat coolant pipe that runs across the block, the crank angle sensor, cam angle sensor and I think there's one more somewhere.. don't remember. But there's not many.

4. The USDM intake bolts directly onto the JDM block and all sensors plug into the JDM sensors already on the JDM motor. This is the fastest, most efficient carefree way.

Keep the JDM intake in case you need a new throttle body or what not.

My USDM engine is a '99 and my JDM engine was a '97. The water pump, timing belt tensioner were different along with the holes for the spark plugs. My USDM ones were oval and the JDM ones were square. This wasn't an issue as the oval ones still fit inside the JDM ones nicely and cover the hole like 99% :smt023

i take it you went from a 2.5 into a 2.5 right? becuse this wouldn't work for me. i went 2.2l to 2.5l

i just got my motor from japan star motors, can you run the jdm with out the egr tapped. would it thro a code, would a defouler keep the code from popping up?

unless you reprogram the ECU or get the JDM ecu, your going to thro a code and also fail emissions since it plays a large role in that

Just thought I would add that my 98 with 4EAT only had the 2 studs and 2 bolts holding the engine to the trans, so that isn't a JDM only thing.
