quick question, check engine light on?

Well i was driving and all of a sudden i see the check engine light on. I'm like WHAT!!! lol so i take it to advanced auto parts and ask if they can check it for codes and they say yes. Ok, they tell me if its obd1 or obd2 and i say idk. (i have a 96 sedan ej22 manual) so the guy gets underneath my dash and say "nope its obd1, i can't check it" so i leave. Now i was searching threads here and i see someone wrote if you have a connection plug below the steering wheel its obd2.

so now i'm confused :-? , did the guy not know if it was a obd1 or 2. or what?

sorry but im a noob lol

and all i want is for the check engine light to go away. :lol:

all 96 and up are OBDII. theres a little access panal below the steering wheel to the left. just pop down the cover and theres the OBDII connector
