Ok. I got my 96 legacy sedan and I'm lookin to get her rally ready. I've got the wheels n tires coverd, I've got some Hella 500FF fogs with yellow bulbs, jdm projectors, and silverstars in the high beams ALL ON AT ONCE! So I got the light thing coverd.

Now here's the catch, its still my daily driver and I'm not lookin to win some races, I just wanna have fun without braken too much shit. I've been dooing pretty good for a while now off roading, but any input on chassis upgrades, suspension, exterior, whatever. Suguestions are welcome.

Go 5 point and remove the airbags, or be prepared to have massive face pain if you wreck.

And get a cage. Or at least a roll hoop. Don't want to get trapped if you roll.

As for suspension, I can't really recommend anything, other than maybe pulling the suspension off an outback for a little lift. I'd like to get a real suspension for either my WRX or for a future project Legacy, where I could have a long travel suspension that gives a lift and softer spring rates/damping.

Um... Mud flaps. Those are a must. If you have stock mud flaps, get rid of 'em and find some old converyor belt or buy some Rally Armor flaps.

That's all I've got right now.

Wow people have been listing some heavy duty stuff. Sounds to me like the man wants to DD the car but still be able to have a little fun without worrying too much.
1.) Make sure you have ground clearance, suspension swap or whatever.
2.) Make sure you are protected: front skidplate and rear diff protector are good places to start. Mudflaps help too.
3.) Have tools, lights, zipties, tape, etc in the car at all times for "emergencies."
4.) Accept that your car will take some damage. Try to keep it sunny side up though.

Sweet. I have already put on some mudflaps, I'm gonna weld up some skidplate and diff covors soon. I've takin the car to a 4x4 off road park beforew and took on just about everything they had besides the mud bogger pit and the relly big rocks.

My favorate was the puddle that didn't Look very deep. I went in at about 3 mph and endid up with water OVER my hood splashed onto my window LOL,

I went there with 17" 2008 WRX wheels and sport tires NO PROBLEM. But I have a set of aluminum 14"ers for future off roading.

After that trip I found skid plates, good axle shafts, and a sealed airbox (wich I found mine full of mud) to be important

I did that in my BE. It was funny, it was like 2" deep for 6', then it just DROPPED OFF. I SLAMMED my car into reverse, and dumped the clutch giving it just enough go pedal to get it moving without stalling. After getting out, my air filter was completely and utterly soaked. Come to think of it, I never replaced that air filter after that either...

also try to get slightly taller tires. You can probably get another 1-1.5" of tire diameter in there if you're stock ride height (definitely more if you have an outback or outback suspension). Not much but you never know if that .5" of extra ground clearance will be difference between a good and bad day...

I think a rollcage would be a bit excessive since he's trying to drive it daily.

You'll definitely want to upgrade the suspension. Something that's fairly stiff and stable but with good dampening for large bumps. If you're not looking for adjustable coilovers, maybe some KYB AGX struts where you can adjust the dampening? That would be a decent compromise for everyday driving.

As for the 5 point harness suggestion, I think that would be great even in daily driving, as long as you're not worried about having to get in and out of the car quickly after robbing a bank or something

I definitely agree with the guys about skidplates. I don't think you'd really need a snorkel, but shoring up the stock system so there's no leaks in the fender section of the intake system would be a good idea. Also have some extra filters on hand.

A roll hoop is a single bar that bolts to the floor behind the driver's seat, follows the B pilar up, goes along the roof, then down the other B pillar, and bolts to the other floor. You would be able to keep your back seat, it wouldn't require much interior modification, you wouldn't have to mess with a cage getting in and out, and if you roll the car, the entire roof won't collapse on you. :) It's an alternative to a roll cage.

Ill probly weld one up as soon as I get some seats and harnessis. I think my next thing will be to get an ej25 block and re build it with my heads, or just the whole 2.5 its self.

The jdm skidplates are decent and all but I prefer a full coverage skidplate like the primitive racing one I have...they don't cost that much more either...

Everyone has posted good ideas. Keep in mind something.. you said you want to actually race? That means you're going to race in a sanctioned event. That is unless you mean race you mean you and your friends driving real fast somewhere.
If you plan to participate in sanctioned events like SCCA Rally-X and so on you need to read the rule book.
The rule book will tell you what you can and can not have on your car depending on what class you intend to participate in.
All sanctioning bodies will have their own participation rules and you will have to pass technical inspections before staging.

Lights and tires are only half the problem.
You need to a pick a car classification like stock, modified and race modified and follow the list of what you can and cannot do to your car.
If you plan to keep the car as a daily driver you might as well skip the full race class division.

Part 2:

Beef up your car. Make sure the motor and chassis is strong. What point is buying floodlights and mud flaps and if you have a bad head gasket and your car leaks oil or coolant?
Your car can not leak fluid at all.

All your inner plastic fender panels need to be braced in so you don't lose them when they start rattling.

Race prepping and daily driver is an oxymoron. You are going to sacrifice something to achieve another.
Ride for performance, comfort for strength.

Ask yourself if it's worth to make your daily driver a racer.. then consult the rule book of who you plan to race in.
If this is your daily driver you need to prepare to destroy your car. Ask yourself if you can wreck it and be ok for daily life.
Maybe not wreck.. but severely damage your car and still have money to fix it for the daily driver role.

I'm not trying to be an asshole but make sure you're aware of what you're about to embark in.
