I have a good family friend at Maaco who said he would paint the car for $300. Any color I want. I trust the guy, hes a family friend so I will not be getting the "regular" $300 treatment. The guy will do a good job. So now the question is not only what color do I paint it, but should I also have him peel off the two tone gray Outback lower door stickers and paint it all one color? I do not want the bumpers painted so they will be staying black. But beyond that I cannot make up my mind. Here are some of my thoughts.
-flat green (if so, which color green? Light or Dark?) I really like this idea.
-flat black
-shiny black
-white (to match the back) I really like white wagons for some reason. It would look really good splattered with mud.
-red (to match the drivers door)
-any other color I want.

Should I remove the two tone stickers or leave them?

Please help me decide SL-i. Most of you know the car and what I use it for, what paintjob would match its character the best?

You rally, right? Then you should go to a visible red. Red & black is badass.

It's tough. I like the white from the back but I like the darker color up front since it gives it a more sinister look, which I think is fitting for your car because of what's under the hood...sleeper status.

So I would say a dark color would look best, either flat green or black. The flat color would have a more rugged look IMO.

Looks damn good when you do wash it. Even better in the rain!

Gunmetal is a nice choice if that floats your boat.

And get rid of the two tone.. That sticker has to go.

PAINT IT WHITE! Then we can roll together in our white turbo BKs.

No really, I love my white wagon. It keeps cool in the summer even without any tint compared to my red car, and it's easy to fix dings and nicks in the paint. I think the Outback two-tone white would be even easier to maintain and match your black/dark bumpers.

it totally depends if you want the car to stick out or to blend in if you want attention paint it none stock color there are few combos you can do like black and red, black and orange, black and green. if you want to stay stockish then paint it same color as in the title so you dont have to change it. i personally would paint it something more unique than stock or white.

Here's my vote:

remove stickers
Paint some color (this really is a personal choice, a good paint could really add value, but a flat paint or something might be more durable and easier to fix)
on the bumpers and lower trim, where the stickers are, retain that look by applying a thin rhino-line. This will keep it fresh even after being slammed with rocks and dirt.

I think white with a grey rhino-line would look good. Or if you really wanted to go bold, bio-hazard orange w/pearl top coat. I did that color on an RC rock crawler, and it looked really awesome. Then throw on the black rhino line to finish it off

Well, its done:
Talk about murdered out. I need to repaint the wheels now. Everything on the car is black, right down to the skidplate. It is a Satin Black single stage paint that is very very tough. I had them debage it as well, except for the Legacy badge which has holes in the trunk. I've got a special badge that will have a place of honor back there. Just picked it up from Japanland today, an authentic 1996 FIA WRC championship badge that came on the 1996 STI Limited models.
Also, it looks like blacked out JDM headlights might have to be next on the list of mods.

Looks great! Blacked out JDM lights? Since they only pop up from time to time, it's really easy to bake them and poll them apart. The highbeam reflector and the low beam projector remain on one half, while the headlight cover and the main chrome part comes off together. So painting that reflector black would be cake.

Also, something you might consider is tinting your corners and doing something like this for the center garnish:

That looks absolutely devilish! Never thought I'd like a matte/satin black, but that just makes the curves pop like you wouldn't believe. Good choice for a rally car. :)

(Sorry, that's a knee-jerk reflex...I own a car in that very rare colour, and it's Blue Steel...a LOT lighter than Gunmetal!)

^ Haha I forgot about that line. Blue Steel indeed.
I am 700 miles away from the car right now and will be until August so a proper photoshoot will have to wait. I'm collecting parts in the meantime. By the time I get a shoot done the car will have black JDM projectors, hopefully a non-tweaked bumper beam, a reworked lightbar and will have finally been put on the dyno. I hope to run 15-18psi with it as well. It will be a completely different car in the fall, I can't wait.

I agree man but I think of it this way. I am opening a whole new chapter in that cars life. It has lived several lives and this is the start of its newer, faster, sexier life.
