first off this isnt a full rebuild on your MT transmission. also this was done a 2001 Legacy 5mt and a 05 outback 5mt.
Stuff needed.
Breaker bar
3/8 ratchet
12mm wrench
14mm wrench
12mm socket
14mm socket
Hammer
Punch set
#2 Peretex sealant (Use #2 because this is the none hardening sealant which helps seal the case. With all the vibration it puts out you want the sealant to flex with the case peices. Also you should smooth the #2 out with a chemical brush so you get an even sealing surface)
Big Flat tip Screwdriver
Torque wrench 10 to 30ft lbs or 120 to 320in lbs
Acid brush or Small paint brush(to put on sealant)
Oil pan(drain before starting)
Plastic scraper(to remove old sealant, DO NOT USE METAL SCRAPER!!!)
Rags
ok first off i did this because i had to get my car on the road again. the reason we torn down 2 transmissions was that the 05 outback tranny i bought didnt have a speed sensor, and the axels didnt have the ABS cogg gears. this is also for guys that want to make there scooby RWD, as the tranny doesnt not need the front diff to work. before you start make sure to drain all the gear oil you can, and have rags ready. it will get messy. also take pics for your referance(will need later).
this is the case. it is split into 3 peices(marked in red).

fist thing you have to punch out the shifter adapter on the end of the case. below it is circled in blue with black arrow.

next remove the tail shaft case. 9 bolts. this will require some elbow grease(aka hammer and flat head, make sure not to dig into the soft aluminium) to get loose. below is the picture of what the under(inside)looks like. the shifter will not come out of the tranny yeat so dont pull on it. inside this section you will find your center diff. and 2 sets of gears. these gears have to be lined up with each other when you put the tranny back together. pull the center diff off after you remove the gear set that is next to the diff. i took rubber gloves and wraped the bearing.

next remove the bolts holding the 2nd case to the fwd case. this will also need some elbow grease. once you take the 2nd part of the tranny off you can now remove your shifter.

now you come to the main part of the case this has both 14 mm and 12mm bolts. look at all your bolts before you use elbow grease to split this case. also there are 2 bolts you have to remove before the case will spilt(i learned this after a min of hammering. below they are marked in red.

BEFORE YOU SPLIT THIS CASE MAKE SURE YOU LIE IT ON ITS LEFT SIDE. BAD THINGS WILL HAPPEN IF YOU DO NOT. once you split this the main case you will see all your gears and front diff. not in order to remove your front diff you have to remove the shafts. first the top shaft marked in red, than the bottom shaft marked in blue, in order to remove the bottom shaft you have to remove the other 2 bolts holding it in(marked in red below). after that is done you can remove your front diff.

after all that is done you tranny is in peices, as i said take pics for your own reference. when puting your tranny back together just do everything in reverse order. one thing to make sure to do is line up the forward bearings. they are keyed. marked below in red. before putting the cases back together clean the mateing surfaces before putting on #2 permatex sealant.

the torqure specs for the case are:
fwd case 18 ft lbs(i torqued mine to 30 ft lbs, will explain later).
middle case 18 ft lbs(i tourqed to 25 ft lbs)
tail shaft case 30 ft lbs( i did 30 ft lbs)
alot of ppl think that the small amount of torque causes the tranny to wear(aka the bearings to walk). i torqued mine to 30 and 25 ft lbs because i beleive this will help keep the bearings from walking. only time will tell if this was not a good thing to do.
