View Full Version : Disabling the Airbags temporarily???

So I read on here that if you want to rally your legacy to take out the airbag for obvious reasons... Im wondering if I can disable the airbags when I go off road but hook them back up when Im ready to drive to and from work? I would rather not take the steering wheel off and replace it but rather pull a relay or something of that nature (possibly a in-the-cabin switch). Anybody have any insights as to what I should do??? And have you done it before????? If so how do I avoid setting them off while disabling them????

I dont mind not having an airbag when Im offroad but really think I and my passangers should have them for when they are needed on the pavement.

Thanks in advance,

Pretty sure there's an SRS fuse.

Yep.. check the manual for the fuse location.. should be in the car.

I'm pretty sure its the one with the yellow cage around it to keep you from accidentally pulling it.

Ahh learned something new!.. so that's what that was.. it kept falling off after I had to remove some stuff.

I also found out someone put fuses in the spots that were meant to be left blank.

And we are sure that I can pull it (ignition off) and put it back (ignition off) without setting the system off or ANY ill effects?????? Someone please tell me you have done this already and are 100% sure it works fine.

Thanks

And you have done this and reinstalled it before????? So aside from the airbag light being on and the airbags disabled, are there any other things that it affects?? Seatbelts maybe??

As long as you have taken it out and put it back in FIRST HAND, i think i will give it a shot.

1. If you pull the SRS fuse the Airbags will not function if the car gets a big enough hit to trigger the SRS sensors in the front of the car
2. If your airbag system is non-functional, the airbag light will illuminate to tell you so - that's what it's there for.

pull both SRS fuses. and wait about 15min for the capacitor to discharge. its how you disengage the airbag system for service

BOTH fuses???? are they both under the wheel or is one of them in the engine compartment????

two fuses both under the wheel. ones for the SRS control unit, other is power to set the bags off. pull both otherwise the computer will think the bags set off

Don't freak out so much. I hope you have calmer nerves while driving in whatever extreme conditions you think warrant pulling the fuses in the first place.

Nothing much but there was a close call the other day on a lookout road that was freshley graveled... a little bit of oversteer and the nose of her skimmed the inside embankment (really soft dirt covered in pine needles... absolutely no damage) and spun my car about 120 degrees at about 25 mph. Just figured the next time im out it would be worth while.

Thanks for the advice everyone.

For what its worth I've hit trees going pretty dang fast, once on the side fender and another at a diagonal angle on the bumper and the bags didnt go off. Our older Subarus don't have airbag sensors at the front sides and I believe you must be going well over 25+ for them to go off.

airbags wont go off under 25mph unless you exceed a certain number of G's
