wrx tranny swap or not???

well comes to find a coworker of mines has a edm 03 wrx, engine and tranny for sale. but i was more intersted in the tranny, for when i get the turbo swap done to my car, hopeing by the end of this year. my question is would it be worth puting the wrx tranny in? cuz i no the n/a trans. is worthless if u drive hard, and i like to drive hard! and im pickin it up for $750. or he said we could keep the diff. and swap out all the gears, and still keep my rear diff. or something like that.

lol the wrx transmission is also worthless when you drive it hard. even the 03+ with the wider gears. Go to NASIOC tech forum to see what I mean.

so do you think its worth getting? would it be any better then the legacys? or should i just save for like a gear set or something? trying not to do that part any time soon...

Any transmission is worthless if you drive it hard. Go look at the guys thinking their $5k PPG boxes are indestructible.

Ben has been using his n/a tranny for what, a year now? two? ~300wtq and all he needed is an upgraded clutch. That's not to say it's the best option out there, but if you don't launch the car or do anything stupid like that, the n/a tranny can hold a decent amount of power.

The WRX transmission also uses a pull type clutch, so you'd need a completely new clutch set and a few other things. Don't forget about matching the rear end with it as well.

Splitting both cases just to switch the gears would also be a waste of time and money IMO.

The WRX tranny is newer, and therefore less possible wear on it than your stock tranny. Is it better for your overall purposes? Probably not if you do indeed drive the way you say.

The WRX tranny is newer, and therefore less possible wear on it than your stock tranny. Is it better for your overall purposes? Probably not if you do indeed drive the way you say.

yeah, it would be about 3 years newer, but then again it's going to be coming out of a WRX, which will be inherently driven as or more aggressively than his legacy, unless he knows the current owner drives like a complete grandma (though him getting an EDM transmission should be an indicator of how he really drives). The only advantage would be the pull mechanism , which is supposed to distribute torque more evenly across the pp vs his tranny's push style, but the case and most of the tranny insides will be the same. There's a possibility of slightly wider 1st and 2nd gear if that 03 is a later MY to get the RA gears also. This would be offset by the taller final drive, he currently has either a 3.9 or 4.11 vs the WRX's 3.54. The taller gearing has been shown to put more strain on the drivetrain vs. the shorter gearing (jdm models got 4.11 or even 4.44 FD's as comparison), not to mention how to affects the performance of the engine.

Transmission alone, upgraded pull clutch $500+, matching rear end $200, odds and ends another $100, you're looking at around $1500 for everything. I suppose if you have absolutely no more headroom in the budget and want everything to be put in now, you could go with the wrx route, but in retrospect, I'm glad I didn't do that when I got swapped because now I'm putting that money towards something even more robust for a future upgrade now...
