Okay, just got the news today that my 2000 LGT manual trans is toast. one of the front bearings moved and ground up my case on the inside. I've been looking for a replacement, but car-part.com says that only 2000 LGT trans works with a 2000...like there is no year spread for the BH? like I would think all 00-04's work as long as I get a GT trans?? and I'm not looking for a outback trans...I know about 5th gear being different. Just need someone to say yes, any 00-04 LGT trans will work...or any others.

Any 4.11 geared, push-style clutch transmission from an EJ series Subaru will work perfectly with your car.

Translated to English, that means you can use any 5-speed manual transmission from the following cars:

97-04 Legacy 2.5GT
03-04 Legacy L
98-01 Impreza 2.5RS
97-04 Forester (non-turbo)

You already know about the Outback thing so I wont bother getting into that. To directly answer your question, yes, any 00-04 Legacy GT trans will work.

okay, my attempt to prove the auto yards wrong went no where. I just even got off the phone from my closest subaru dealer and they have two different part numbers for 5mt for the 2000 year...one for before like 6/00 and ones after that for the 01 model year. so if they are different, was is? like the VSS or a switch for backup or something? now I'm getting all worried about this and trying to find one that just goes in...ugh.

its easy dont be scared of it. also i love haveing the outback tranny. car is alot better to drive.

The only thing you would need to worry about is whether your old rear diff has the same final drive as the new transmission. If you can't find a tranny with the same FD, you just need to get a matching rear diff along with the new 5mt, and you can pretty much any subaru 5mt you can find...

thanks, but I went and got the trans from a 2000 BE that had 92,000 on it. it was a GT LDT. My wagon is all back in all but the exhaust, getting some new gaskets and I need to get some fluids. Coolant, 5mt oil, and those gaskets it's ready to roll. :cool:

I don't want to make a new thread for this but i'll say it.

the local Subaru dealer said that Subaru don't make there own gear oil...I then sent him a email with the part number for Extra-S stuff. See if I get anything back, looks like I might run Silkolene oil in my 5mt. the none synthetic stuff.

If your dealer can even get Extra-S, it's going to come in a giant 20 liter container.

good job ont he swap. i really to recommend amsoil 75w90 synthetic gear oil. its a great gear oil.

yeah, i've seen good stuff about amsoil.

but right now I have a problem with my shifter...that c-clip that keeps that plastic bushing in place in the stay arm...it's not there and the shifter moves all up and down. I can't seem to get the c-clip to stay, I lightly push on the plastic and the c-clip just moves and goes flying. this is at the lower ball pivot.
