View Full Version : big problems with my new rims!Help!

i put my new rims on my car today. (99 Legacy L) The new rims and tires are p225/40/r18s with a 42 offset on the rims. They went on with onyl one problem there was a lugnuts i couldnt get on. i didnt think much of if since i had 19 ouyt of 20 lugs i thought i was good. so i took it for a test run to see how it felt. and it sounded horrible. my front driver side tire was very shaky and not on very tight. (the back was rubbbin a little but that is my concern yet)

so i took it to a local car shop and asked em to tightn the lugs with a air wrench. They tightened em and it didnt fix it and said that my studs that holsd the lug nuts on were stripped and he couldnt tighten em because they were stripped. he was guna charge me like 400 dollars to have all 20 studs replaced and the tire then mounted. i told him to f off. lol.

i drove the car home and put the stock setup back on to see how that was. i got all 4 tires on bt 7 or 8 of the lug nuts wouldnt go back on i guess because the studs were strippd. i took it around the block and it didnt wobble or make any bad noise just a lil loose since i was missin 7 lugs.

so i guess im askin what would have caused the studs to get stripped?,
can i fix it myself so i dont have to pay 400 dollars?, and any other ifnromation that would help me out.

Thanks for the help in advance. and i had to get the tuner locking lugs so did those damn things strip em>? and what is the thread size of my lugs now just to double check. Thanks

Incorrect installation and removal of lugnuts.

and wheels center bore being wrong. you shouldnt use a air ratchet to put them on. hand star and a tq wrench to 75ft lbs.

did you use your stock lug nuts or new ones? what is the thread size if new???

Also I would not drive with 7 missing lug nuts. That's at least 2 on some wheels. The stripped studs will need to be replaced.

there are so many things wrong with your installation I'm not even going to go and list it one by one...

Instead I'm just going to say, if you're going to do something, take the time to do it right or don't do it at all.

i thought5 i was doin it right and i did take my time. but i found that the problenn was autozone told me the wrong thread size and they sold me lugs that were 12x1.5 not 12x1.25 and wen i put the new ones on they stripped the studs. so i guess learn from your mistakes right. has ne one replaced there studs annd is it hard or can i do it myself? Thank again

did you not feel any resistance when you were initially threading them on? See the problem with running low offset wheels (which is another technical no-no in of itself, but whatever it's a new trend among subaru owners now) is that the lugnut wells are usually much deeper. This means you need to be more careful and starting the lugnut on the lug because often times youre going to be doing it blind. You absolutely need to start the threads by hand. If you can't get the lugs on with your fingers, take the socket off whatever youre using, put the lugnut in there, and use that to start the lugnut by hand.

If you feel any resistance, you BACK OUT, not CRANK ON IT MORE. Did you not feel increasing resistance as you were trying to force the wrong threaded lugnut onto the lugs? You were lucky that some of the lugnuts got crossthreaded instead of your lug. You're also lucky that the lugnuts didn't decide to hold onto your lugs and end up snapping the lug when you were trying to take them off.

Search scoobymods or NASIOC on lug removals. It's straightforward but time consuming.

no he didnt feel it most likely i have a set of lugs that came with the wheel i dont know what thread size is but they go on to the studs no problem but i can feel a slight shake in them. Thats why i asked what was the thread size of the lugs^.

you can replace studs yourself its not difficult.
