resurfacing a flywheel

I've been reading mixed opinions on resurfacing a flywheel.. is there a right way and wrong way to do it at a machine shop? I don't feel like spending $500 on a light weight flywheel.. :(

Subaru says not to resurface the flywheel.. and a new one at the stealership is $500! Is there an alternative that is cheaper but OE equivalent??

if you don't mind me asking, what made you change your mind? Are you doing this on a used flywheel or a new/reman/oem replacement type?

problem with resurfacing is heat checks, they dont machine down, and most flywheels have heat check/marks

It's my OE used flywheel, installing new clutch/pressure plate.. you wouldn't resurface a new flywheel! I figure a lot of people get paranoid about resurfacing a flywheel.. but people have been doing it for years and years and years without any problems. Technology hasn't changed. I called Subaru and they said it's ok to resurface it.. my cars a daily driver, no mods so it won't hurt it :D

true.. but that's ok, I'm not revving the shit out of my car or doing any sort of auto-cross.. :razz:
