Grinding noise when driven

Hi,

Just recently bought a 2000 subaru impreza rs 2.5L 5MT sedan

My problem:

When the car is driven forwards or reverse there is a metal on metal grinding/clanking sound how ever when the car is turned either left or right the sound dissapears. When put back to straight line driving the sound returns.

MY Guess:

The CV joints have gone bad

Is there any way to prove this with out removing the cv joint

Any other ideas please let me know

i dunno about impreza'z but the exaust heat sheild on the BD almost always rattles and can be solved by simply removing it.

mine did it on buth subies and it sound very bad/mechanical to me but ended up being a super easy fix

Does the sound go away if the RPMS go up? how about speed? Is it dependent on speed?
