I'm looking for a good synthetic fluid to put in my tranny and rear diff. 98 ej22 with 5spd manual trans.

AMSoil 75w90. fluch with lucus gear oil. i love it.

just use any good oil in the rear, you don't need anything fancy. People have used valvoline synth in the tranny with good results. I'm on Redline in the trans right now, shifts good, just like the Subaru Extra S - both popular/tried and true options.

DO NOT try the "scotty cocktail".

I wouldn't even recommend any aftermarket "performance" fluids. OEM is good enough and doesn't cause leaks. And how hard do you have to drive in order to get that .5hp?

well I see -40'C in the winter alot and its hard to get into reverse when the fluid is thick thats why I want to try a synthetic. Oh well I'm going to the dealer to buy a wheel bearing and i'll see what they recomend.

Extra-S isn't synthetic but it is in fact the OEM fluid for Subaru's. So far it's worked wonders in 3 transmissions I've put it in.

It's most likely going to be hard to shift any transmission at -40C, you'll just have to get used to that.

Heavy Duty Class 8 Line Haul Follow the OEM drain interval (miles or hours) for synthetic oil up to 250,000 miles or 3 years, whichever comes first. Otherwise, drain at twice the OEM interval for conventional oil.
Heavy Duty Off-Road Vocational Follow the OEM drain interval (miles or hours) for synthetic oil up to 120,000 miles or 1 year, whichever comes first. Otherwise, drain at twice the OEM interval for conventional oil.

For product service life in non-differential applications, consult owner’s manual or the OEM for either normal or severe synthetic oil service intervals. Where service intervals are unavailable, drain at twice the interval for conventional oil.

Gear oils should be changed more frequently when operating vehicles or equipment in dusty or dirty conditions unless the gear system is properly sealed and equipped with membrane type breathers.

Recommended for use in differentials, manual transmissions and other gear applications requiring any of the following specifications: API GL-5, MT-1, MIL-PRF-2105E, Dana SHAES 234 (Formerly Eaton PS-037), Mack GO-J, or the differential (hypoid) gear oil specifications from all domestic and foreign manufacturers such as GM, Ford and Daimler Chrysler. Amsoil is ok, but just like the motor oil, you can usually find comparable oils for usually way less than the stuff they charge.




Why exactly is Uncle Scotty's bad for the transmission?


Part of it is the syncromesh that you put in, not very good on the brass/nickel components in the subaru transmission. But a lot of it is also because you're mixing in 3-4 different oils, each one having their own additive package that are of unknown consequence when theyre mixed together. The mixing also increases the replacement interval of the fluids, because mixed fluids tend to breakdown faster, so most people change it every 10k-15k because the shift consistency just degrades around that time.

When I used the cocktail, I took it out after around 12k miles for the reason stated above- it looked liked chunky chocolate milk. Some fanboys on NASIOC swear by it, but a few well known transmission rebuilders like DS1 and andrewtech have begun to advise people not to use the mix, and even scotty himself has admitted that he just mixed it in trial and error and didn't really think about the long term consequence of running such a variety of fluids in the transmission.

on Toronto-Subaru-Club, a lot of guys are running the Gadget Guy mix.

In the rear diff, it's Redline Shockproof Heavy Weight (http://www.redlineoil.com/products_gearlubricants.asp?productID=44&subCategoryID=16&categoryID=6) and in the tranny/front diff, 3 litres of the 75W90 NS (http://www.redlineoil.com/products_gearlubricants.asp?productID=47&subCategoryID=17&categoryID=7) with 1litre of Shockproof Lightweight (http://www.redlineoil.com/products_gearlubricants.asp?productID=43&subCategoryID=16&categoryID=6)

This is a good thread with a bunch of people using different and very happy. I think it all comes down to preference. I'm going to change to the Motul for rear diff soon.

I use Royal Purple on by my subies. Trans, and rear diff, plus oil.
