I have used a universal O2 sensor and so far (only 5k miles) it has worked fine. I didn't have the cash for the oem direct plug in one so, I bought a universal one for a lot cheaper and had to splice it in. I was replacing the rear sensor and I had to use a 3 wire one, on my car which is a 97 Legacy GT sedan, the front is also a 3 wire sensor. I've heard that the main problem is in the splicing. The sensor came with cheap connectors and I went to the local auto parts store and got some good, more water resistant connectors to splice with.
+1 I use universal Bosch sensors with my own quick connectors.

yep, the Bosch ones work well, just get good connectors and slide the waterproof box over them (or you could use some waterproof shrinkwrap tubing).

Please post part numbers as well. Along with which engine/year of your car.
I could not get the universal to work on my 2.2. Ended up fighting to return the universal and then paying the $$ for the OEM replacement.
Thanks and good luck-
