hand brake woes

When I first got my subaru one of my friends told me that you should never pull the hand brake when driving because with full time AWD when you yank on the hand brake it locks up the rear tires and wrecks the differential and all that. I have never done it and always just slid by downshifting hitting the gas and turning.

Was he right in saying that or is it safe to lock the rear in a subaru without ruining anything? Is there some more technical information about the differential or something so it is possible? I'm always out to learn more about my car so please do tell

I do it the winter to whip into a driveway or around a corner on empty streets, but I don't ever accelerate until I release it. I guess I've never thought about it. Maybe I should stop? lol

Then again, if you are on dry roads and you are moving along I really doubt you can lock up the rear tires completely without a pretty violent crank to the e-brake.

luckily, i found out early my e-brake doesn't work, something about the cable linkage being snapped.

could that possibly be because a previous owner was ripping the ebrake too much :lol:. ive used mine a few times but i just dont think anything good can come out of it.

Well, if you have a manual trans. then you can just push in the clutch and then pull the brake. If you have an auto then I'm not so sure.

On an auto the center diff is a clutch pack so it can't be that big a deal. On a manual with the VC it will put load on it but if for occasional loose surface use it can't be that big a deal either.

yea my ebrake was toast from day one cabble is streched way out. iv always dreamed of having a hydralic ebrake put in
