Hi all,
New to the forums (sort of) and figured I'd post some pictures of the Leggy. These are fairly old pictures and the car is filthy, but I'll upload some more pictures in a few days when I get her cleaned and such. Comments, of course, are always welcome. :)

I always had a crazy notion of having that type of hood, without the usual subaru scoop, and just the vent in the front part of the hood, and then doing a V mount intercooler setup after a swap.

Thanks for all the feedback, everyone.
I'll upload some engine pics some time soon. Today if I get the chance (While I'm at work. :) )
And yes, the turbo is already installed and everything seems to be working fine. I do, however, need to tune my PP SMT-6 for speed density to rid myself of this nasty MAF issue. Otherwise, no problems at all.
The hood, as 2.5GT mentioned, is a custom dual-vent VIS carbon fiber with the STi scoop. I originally ordered a hood that was a carbon fiber version of the stock hood but they didn't have any available and offered me this hood for the same price. I do like the way it looks and the STi scoop certainly provides good air to my TMIC but the front vent can be a little annoying in crappy weather. Not that it matters all that much...
As far as the grille goes, it's definitely coming off soon. I'm going back to my stock grille after I gut, paint and mesh it at a buddy's shop.
And those chrome things on my fenders aren't actually deer whistles. They're road line marker lights. In Japan the roads can be so slender that a lot of cars use these lights as a reference to the line on the road to make sure they are as close to the line as possible.
Thanks, Huffer. I'll edit my first post with a mods list as soon as I get a chance. :)

This hood would be label under "V Line" according to VIS right?
and is it direct bolt on? I see that you have hood pins, is it possible to do without? and use the stock hood hinge?

As far as I know, yes. The hood is the "V Line" model based on the description I see. You can save some cash getting it at visracingkits.com I think too. It is a direct bolt-on factory replacement. No modification needs to be done at all. You can use the stock hoods latch and screw it directly into the VIS hood and latch it just like normal. I use the hood pins as a backup in case the stock latch were ever to give while at higher speeds as it is known to happen. I would seriously recommend hood pinning /ANY/ carbon fiber hood to avoid watching it rip off and fly down the road behind you. Especially after spending roughly 1K USD on it. :)

The more i look at your hood, the more i want it now
how much of a difference is the CF hood vs. the OEM hood?
and i really hate the idea of hood pins, it makes it so "cluttered" with it on.
eekay
06-23-2009, 10:36 PM
The difference is pretty huge weight-wise. The stock hood weighs close to 50 lbs. while the CF hood weighs nearly have that I believe at 28 lbs.
Actually, I wanted to use different hood pins that were somewhat hidden. Unfortunately, there isn't a lot of room where the Leggy's hood goes across the cross member so you kind of need to use standard, old-school style hood pins. Although, I don't mind them. The old-school, hotrod style stuff is awesome. :)

Hey how much did ur turbo kit cost and how much more power does it make
I paid roughly $3,700 for everything. It produces (at 6psi boost) around 100+ more HP to the crank. On a stock 2.5GT that would put you somewhere around 265 HP to the crank and about 210-220 to the wheels.

Haha. Yep! Although, I MIGHT be changing them at some point. I really want to get some custom stuff done. Mainly just the lighting so hopefully I can keep the CF gauge faces. But, the green and red lights drive me nuts... I want white and blue I think. I'll figure something out. :)
have you tried the DIY for sandign the grren off the back and sharpie-ing the bulbs?
eekay
06-30-2009, 11:32 AM
Nope. Haven't tried anything yet. Although, the funny thing is, I was thinking the EXACT same thing about the sanding. I've looked at the gauge faces a few times trying to come up with ideas. As far as sharpieing the bulbs, I would probably just buy the proper colored bulbs and toss those in. Not sure how long the sharpie ink will last based on the temp of the lights.

This depends highly on what engine you're doing this on, but most of them are very similar. Mine is the EJ25 and here's how I did it...
The oil feed for the turbo goes into the galley hole underneath the alternator on top of the block. There's an oil temp or pressure sensor there already, so you need to get a split adapter for it. The water lines are located on the bottom back side of the throttle body just to the right of center (left of center if looking at the engine from the front.) It is one small, 8"-ish length hose that you remove. Then, simply connect each water line to the turbo. Which goes where doesn't matter as it only circulates through. If you're still confused, I can try to take some pictures or something, just let me know. Hope this helps!

^^ i seem to hear that a lot, making me want to wait for a full swap...
eekay
08-21-2009, 01:23 PM
Yup. We've been going over a few little ideas on how we could pull the engine and try to create a closed deck out of the 2.5 as opposed to a full swap. Mainly because I'd be able to keep a nice, high compression and still be able to boost fairly decently. I just want to keep then engine itself because it runs so damn well. Otherwise, swap it is! Create myself a fun little Legasti. :)
99gtlimited
08-21-2009, 04:30 PM
careful, trying to boost (over 10 psi or so) a high compression motor is asking for trouble, you're gonna have to get a really good tune and run race gas most likely...
eekay
08-21-2009, 05:29 PM
Yup. Most definitely. It would really just be experimental for the most part to see how much boost could be pushed through a "closed deck" EJ25. There are also some gaskets that can be put in that lengthen the engine and drop compression by quite a bit. Not sure how well they work or anything, but it certainly couldn't hurt. Of course, this project is going to be quite a ways down the road as I don't have the time to do this much work on the car right now. :(

You're very welcome. I'm not sure what else you plan on doing during this turbo setup, but for running the oil inlet line, you don't need to remove the throttle body/intake manifold. You should be able to get all the work done with only lifting the alternator to the right (no need to completely remove) and tapping into the galley plug that is already being used by the oil temp sensor. You'll need to get an adapter for this (which shouldn't be too hard to find) with the same threading for your oil line and the currently installed oil temp sensor. I'll take pics of this as well tonight so you can see the adapter. If you can't find the adapter or an oil line or anything, you can contact AVO and/or Rallitek and they'll have the exact stuff you'll need.
For the headers, I didn't cut anything. In fact, the only modification to anything I did besides the obvious, was moving stuff around where the turbo resides. Just pushed and re-routed a few things but nothing cannibalized. I can also show you that stuff although it might not help depending on your year/model.

mine is a 98 legacy gt 2.5 ej25 same as yours. i got a turbo from a wrecked wrx from a junk yard for 40 dollers cuz my cousin owns it. but the headers are different im not sure if i should make a cut out for the up pipe or wat. wat did you do for a oil return line? i dont want to drill into my oil pan im wondering if i can just dump it into the valve cover like you would if you were adding oil, on the back of the heads between the valve covers and heads theres little "D" shaped black plugs im wondering if i can take one out and put te oil in there? wat u think? and im doing the routine headgasket lol, so while its out im just gona do everyhting.
eekay
08-22-2009, 05:34 PM
Ah. Okay. Not sure which cut you would need to make for the up-pipe. I suppose it depends on how much room you're talking about. Might be just as good to have someone make you a custom up-pipe so you don't need to do anything crazy.
As for the oil return, I did drill into my pan. It really isn't as bad as it sounds and it's the easiest and most reliable way to return the oil as gravity does all the work. I'm not sure which "D" shaped plugs you're talking about between the valve covers so I can't really make any recommendations. I'll go take a look at them later today though and see if they might work. Are they above or below where the turbo will be sitting (height-wise?) I'm not sure how well the return would work if the line ends above the turbo itself.

how do u add pictures? i cant seem to figure it out, ill post a pic of those plugs. the oil line is the one with the plug with wires going to it right? wat kinda plug do i get for it? do you think they sell it or something similur at home depot or lowes? this is the same setup im running http://www.cardomain.com/ride/861819 exept the fmic im running a top but he had to cut his do you think i should cut or does it not look safe? i can make my own up pipe but not sure where to put it can u take a pic of urs please? thank you so much for helping me.

and the top plug is about level i think the bottem plug is below but the bottem plug will proboly have be under the oil level do you think it will still work? how much oil is in your valve covers? and the oil plug is the one that is right next to the ej25 logo right?

ok got everything in finally but check engine light on cause no cat so i was gona try the spark plug non fouler thing and see if it works ill take some pics after i clean everything up, im also thinking of moving the maf by the throttle body and move the bov just after the turbo so i can run an open bov but not sure if it will work if anyone nows let me now

Whoa! I didn't even see your two previous replies! Sorry!
I add pictures by going to the "URL" button and just putting in a link to a picture I have somewhere else. There are also ways to embed images but I don't recall how using phpBB. The blue link to bottom-left of any post you make that says "BBCode" will tell you your options though.
For the oil line leading to the turbo, I got an adapter/splitter that came with my turbo kit. I'll upload some pictures of it today. Not sure what the adapter is called or the thread type, but it should be the same as your stock oil pressure sensor that is already there (both threads.)
The up-pipe was made specifically for my car but there was no cutting of the sub-frame at all. It simply went straight from the headers directly into the turbo. When I get a chance to get under my car, I'll definitely get some pictures for you.
The galley plug next to the EJ25 logo is exactly correct. Not sure how much oil is in my valve covers. I haven't had to take them apart yet.
Glad to hear you got everything working! Your best bet for the CEL is to put a HFC in there so you don't have to worry about it. As far as the MAF goes, what type of TMIC are you using? Is there a 5th injector? If there is, the MAF will die. These are extremely finickey!

Here are some pics of the oil line I used, the adaptor, the up-pipe and down-pipe. Not sure why you would need to cut the frame to get to the turbo with the up-pipe. Does that only need to happen if you're using the stock WRX up-pipe/down-pipe or is there literally no room to get the up-pipe to the turbo without it?

Ah. I see. A FMIC would certainly be nice. Although, the TMIC definitely adds to the sleeper-ness of the car. As far as the recirculating BOV/BPV goes, both the AVO (That came with the kit) and the GFB Hybrid are loud enough to hear. However, the AVO BPV is recirculating only (ATM anyway) and the GFB can do full recirc., 50/50 OTA/recirc., and full OTA. I suppose it just depends on what type of IC you end up going with. Sure seems to be coming along though. Glad to hear it and good luck!

Well, you could probably contact AVO and have them sell you just the up and down pipes. They won't care. Otherwise, everything will need to be done at an exhaust/performance shop. And yeah, a majority of the parts can be found elsewhere. However, I'm not sure about the PP SMT-6 configuration. You'll definitely want a piggyback of some sort.

Unfortunately, I haven't got the slightest clue where you'll be able to find any up/down pipes that will fit your setup without any modification. Granted, it should only be minor modification if you go with OBX up and down pipe though. Otherwise, my guess is you would be better off having a custom job done. It really shouldn't be too expensive as the pipes really aren't that long. Also, if you can get all the flanges that you need (header, both turbos, cat/cat-back,) it should moderately cheap.

I got another BG wagon though and I'll be putting the AVO kit on that and swapping out my EJ25 in my BD sedan with an EJ257/6MT this winter. \o/ Once all is said and done, I will most certainly post some numbers. :)
that blows, i blew my motor back in may from a similar issue, but it was while heading to work on the highway with it.
as for the AVO, i was looking for some info on up/down pipes that would fit my setup, Im using and OBX race header and none of the up-pipes that I can find will fit it, since its not like the borla where the collector stops behind the block, the OBX collects where the stock cat sits and goes back another 6 inches :/. hoping to find one that fits it and not have to spend $$$ on a whole new system (custom Fab job) where this one is fine. no of any places that have such a pipe setup?
Unfortunately, I haven't got the slightest clue where you'll be able to find any up/down pipes that will fit your setup without any modification. Granted, it should only be minor modification if you go with OBX up and down pipe though. Otherwise, my guess is you would be better off having a custom job done. It really shouldn't be too expensive as the pipes really aren't that long. Also, if you can get all the flanges that you need (header, both turbos, cat/cat-back,) it should moderately cheap.
the up pipe and down pipe are gonna be an awkward fit then if i go custom, i checked OBX and they only have down pipes. The turbo manifold for the 02+ WRX that they have has the up pipe welded onto it, but idk how well it would fit

Hrm. I would say go ahead and grab the up-pipe turbo flange from the '02 WRX, the OBX down-pipe turbo flange and have someone custom build you some new up and down pipes. As long as the flanges at the turbo and the headers/cat-back are correct, it shouldn't be awkward at all. And it would probably fit much better than having to hack away at other up and down pipes to try to make them fit (which is extremely frustrating...)

I'm sure these are the same as the AVO up and downs as they also bolt directly up to a stock manifold and cat-back. So, if you're willing to part with just the up and down pipes, maybe evolegacy will be interested in purchasing them. Although, I can't be sure about the flanges matching up at the turbo.

once i get an income going again i can take a look at that kit you have tec, as for what im working with for a manifold currently here's a pic of it, you'll immediately notice what i was talking about with it being almost impossible to not go custom with the turbo plumbing

Ah yes. Most definitely different. It certainly looks nothing like the 90 degree bend that normally comes on the EJ25. Also, that header is going back on the RH side of the car. This could certainly pose a problem. What engine are you trying to put those headers on? (Sorry if you've already mentioned it)

For anyone that is wondering, subachad of Nasioc custom makes up-pipes that will work with basically any Subaru, including ours.
Its a pretty good deal at $200.

This is a great looking car, and its even more cool with the AVO kit on it. I'd love to see it sometime!

I'm not sure what exactly is wrong with it yet. I'm leaning more toward a thrown rod than anything. It isn't seized and I don't think I blew a piston wall (hope not!) And yes. I'm going to be doing a full STi swap (EJ257/6MT) some time in the middle or end of this winter. In the mean time, I'll be driving around my '97 white BG. \o/ I'll also be transferring all my aftermarket/JDM parts to my BG this weekend if time allows.

Not yet. Gonna pull the AVO kit out this week and toss it on my BG. Once all that is finished, I'll be able to take a look at the motor and see what happened. Also gonna try to move the car to a different location as my garage is currently only a one-car and temperature here is getting cold enough for me to want to use it. :)

Haha. Believe me, if I had THAT extra cash laying around I would most certainly donate to the swap charity. I do wish you the best of luck though!
The JDM fogs I made fit on the USDM bumper by modifying both the bumper and lights. I think I actually got the instruction from someone who poster here. I'll post the link as soon as I find it. Very simple though with lots of information.
Any updates?
Nothing as far as the EJ257, really. Still looking for a decent deal on the engine and transmission. Rest assured I'll be posting the second they
come in though.
Just for kicks and giggles though, I did buy a new air compressor along with some new air tools... Thus far, it's made my minor modifications MUCH easier. I can't wait for the BIG work. \o/

I have already looked at link about installing JDM fogs on a us bumper but I thought I saw that you have to basically cut then bondo the bumper into a new shape to fit the fogs?

No, sir. Nothing that deep. Just a few simple modifications to the fog mounts, a few drill holes in the bumper and trimming out the fog holes on the front end. It'll take maybe 6-8 hours from start to finish.

Officially started the new project by purchasing this yesterday for $3000. Full Version II STi (engine, transmission, drivetrain, suspension, brakes, etc...) plus an extra WRX turbo and a new lightweight flywheel. All this stuff? Going directly into the '99 LGTL! Of course, I'm going to replace the EJ20G 2.0 block with either an EJ22 fully-closed deck or an EJ257... I'd really like to be able to get this car into the 550-600 BHP range. So, most likely I'll wait it out for the EJ22 FC block. Anyhow, some pics!

So what ended up happening with this car?
Still got it! In fact, I finally came across a chance to do some work on the v2 STi motor. So, I've torn that apart, had the heads machined, got all new gaskets everywhere and am in the process of putting it back together now. Once I get a little more space and the weather permits (it's cold in CO right now!) I'll be finishing up the swap. So far, so good!
