Subaru and the Outer Banks question...

I was thinking of going to the Outer Banks IF I have time when I'm down in N.C. week after next.. having never gone I'm searching now and most say to deflate the tires to around 20 psi.. How deep is the sand in some areas?

It's going to be an extra hike.. to get to the beach that's for sure.

I go to the Outer Banks every summer, usually over July 4th weekend. I've never been to the areas of the beach where they allow vehicles to drive, but I wouldn't consider taking my Suby out there. For some reason it just doesn't scream "Suby environment" to me. I would've probably taken my Jeep out there, but wouldn't consider the Suby.

The sand is deep enough in the areas where I go where I'd want an SUV or pick up truck to even consider it.

ive driven through it with a subaru, with 175 width tires, i wouldnt recommend it, we sunk it down to the rockers, but never got stuck, you need a good tire though, we where running a snow tire at the time we went down

they are all seasons and about 50% thread left.

if they have a good adgressive thread to them good for sand and mud, i dont see a problem, but i wouldnt with waterchanneler all seasons

The tires if I can remember are Toyo 800 ultras

first time I looked up the reviews of this tires and I can agree they suck ass when it rains and right now they squeal when turning.. I will be ordering some summer tires when I get back.

yeah if they dont do well in rain, im sure they suck in sand

Well I leave to go back to CT in the morning.. did not go to the Outer Banks but I did find some nice deep sand in 3 areas local to me (my old towns)

Well the first one was about 3 inches deep of sand riding in the tracks and about 5 riding out of them...

It was ok but it was a road I was not off a roadway..

2nd location was an off site cell tower which was just a path cut in the woods (god I wish CT had stuff like this) I found some deep sand in a area it was as deep as 5 1/2 I decided to stop and take a picture in it as well..

The car did good I love the way the M/T handles over the A/T I never got stuck.. I left site number two when a friken huge ass bug buzzed by my ear when I went to take a pic out the sunroof.

too bad I wont be back down this year when I order my tires when I get home

i am going to the OB later this year if i was taking the wife's OBS i might give it a try but not ion my baby not much ground clearance and horrible tires for it

nice.. at least i know what to expect driving on sand now.. when I was driving else where not where I took the picture above I drove out of the tracks and into the deeper stuff it was not bad.. I never air'ed down the tires as well.
