It took me a WHILE to finally get around to doing this, but I wasn't too happy with my Legacy to post it up prior, haha; so here we go.
Back-story [It's been a rough ride]
Purchased the car back in December of 2007 from a Police Officer. It was my first real car to use for school and work since I'm in a co-op program. Within the first week of owning the car, the gas filler tube rusted out and left the car stranded in my driveway. After fixing that, on the drive home I found out what the ABS shudder feels like during rain, then the next day found out that all my brake lines had corroded and bursted. In January 2008, in a mixture of falling asleep at the wheel for a 90 minute 5AM commute and terrible mixed tires, slid off the road during a snowstorm, obliterating 2 signs and possibly starting many new problems. During the next 4 months, all 4 calipers seized one by one, destroying my rotors. Knock sensors cracked, various bolts sheared and left foglights dangling, and a leaky rear main seal caused consistent smoke puffs at stops. July 4th at UConn, I find out that the tints that the CT Police Officer who sold me the car put on are crazy illegal [5%]. Blown HG's in summer set me into a financial crisis. Promptly fixing those, a couple weeks later my car gets broken into, setting me back once again. SIGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHhhhhh
But that's over with =D
One picture for now, until I start taking more and upload the SL-i meet pics and vids.

The headlights and the HID's, or just the HID's?
The headlights are the JDM Projector headlights that you'll hear about constantly on these forums, as well see on Ebay if you troll for aftermarket stuff there. I got mine from a member on the board here, Andivic, who happened to have some pristine blacked out ones when I just got my car.
The HID's are J.D. Lighting Kits that I got through Shane [Reason on these boards]. I got a couple of sets when I made the buy so I got a nice deal. I think he's currently marketing them for 145 Shipped?

At the last meet, alot of the guys said that my tints looked wicked darker than they actually are. My corner windows and rear windows are all like 8%, which help to make my 35% back windows look a ton darker. pretty sweet =D

Finally, after 8 months I get to see your ride! Looking sharp! I can tell the paint has been well treated - I've always been a fan of white. Its a strange coincidence that I purchased my BD from an ex-cop as well. They must love the performance of a BD Legacy after driving a Crown Vic all day :smt016

That's awesome. Even after that long list of vexations, any of which would turn any normal human away, your car still manages to look pristine. It shows your devotion to one unique automobile and I'd bet money that your car has a personality that rivals most living. The fact that you have stuck with it for these years is a testament to the passion around these cars. The rareness of them is not only in their driveline, but in their souls. Your Legacy is an excellent showing of (I'm going to say it) what makes a Subaru a Subaru.

Is your JDM grill painted black (aka.. did your chrome peel off too?)
)2edline
09-10-2009, 06:59 PM
yeah, WELL...
when i got my grill from Andivic, it was all black, then with my hood touching it when i close it and when it rubs on the headlights, the black rubbed away...revealing chrome!...which later rubbed away and revealed plastic!
so i took leftover 1500 grit sandpaper i found in my brothers garage [random] and scuffed up and sanded away any loose flaking paint and electrical taped my emblem and sprayed with a black spray paint made for plastic lawn chairs...which were also randomly in my brothers garage.
it was spontaneous while i let my egr soak in deep creep. took me 10 minutes to remove prep and spray. the plastic spray is holding up well and has a nice matte, yet glossy look. I'll take pics of it up close.

I figure after reviving some crazy old thread and getting a response I'd post my woes here.
"Got into a little hairy fender bender today, and didn't know if starting a new thread would be best so I revived this fairly suitable one.
Got distracted and late braked into a older bmw today, no damage to his car naturally but my BD loves being tortured.
My radiator upper support bar is more toast than it was before, and got more twisted, the hood is a little tented, but i can flex that out for now.
Questions are, my bumper reinforcement bar took a bend near the middle so my right headlight is tucked inwards and got pushed a little more inwards so that a grille no longer fits inbetween. The bumper cover is fine, but I dont know if bending the reinforcement bar back into shape is possible. I still have my old bumper cover and bumper bar from my GT before i picked up Shane's old one, which was from an outback. CAN I take off the rear reinforcement bar section [where the fogs and stuff screw into] and attach that as well as my current bumper cover to my old GT one and be good? and is replacing the radiator upper support bar a direct bolt in type thing, cus there are sites selling new OE ones cheap,
i.e - http://www2.partstrain.com/store/?N=0&Nr=AND(make:Subaru,model:Legacy,year:1999,brand:Replacement,part:Radiator+Support+Tie+Bar)&ptc=S1171391678W45d204bec356b&ptid=pt5347791754ad1e16aad1a3&id=nu173rj2
Can i also manipulate my fenders a bit if they got bended?
I'll try to get pics up tomorrow, I just don't have the patience for it right now."
Also, after scouring craigslist for a day now, I might be lucky finding a white hood from an outback plus the radiator upper support i need plus maybe some other goodies =] - hopefully I'm back up in no time.

Ugh, since the minor fender bender my clips on my grill have been giving me problems. I was going to order replacement ones from SubaruParts literally tomorrow. But during my drive today, a small bump jarred it loose and it shattered underneath my car at speed. I went back and got my emblem section, it'll live on another day on a new grille. Battle scars yo.
Sadness! after cleaning it up.

NOOO. You DO NOT sell this car. I don't care if you have to store it until you can fix it, or if you have to take public transport to get to places, you are not allowed to sell such a monumental vehicle. It's not dead yet, it can live on to fight another fight; to live another day. You take it's surly attitude in stride, look it in the face and openly say "not just yet."

lol @1996battlewagon, I liked your other blurb enough to put it in my sig,
but at the moment, the car resides at my friends place in Quincy while I use my brothers jeep for work/coop. I'll be looking into it this weekend. I'm all for making the repairs, looking into doing water pump, timing belt, tensioners and idler pulleys.
However, when I was on the highway before the squealing and overheating really began, I turned off asap and got into a gas station. It never pegged the needle, but once I got into a spot at the gas station is basically winded down and shut off. There was a noticeable knocking noise, and then an earlier noise that BE-Fresh in another thread termed at marbles in a cup. If I wasn't fast enough and there is alot of internal damage, then its a whole 'nother story. Another engine would be cheap, but is my chassis worth it?
My brother is helping me look for suitable transplant vehicles for alot of my parts, BD's [found a nice clean BLACK BD ;D] and GC's, but only time will tell. I'll update as necessary. In the mean time...

Got her apart yesterday and today for the most part, I'll edit this post with pics. The gist of this all is, fuck idler pullies.
Basically getting the radiator off, all bolts sheared, lol, so new radiator if she does live. But taking a look at the timing covers, on the bottom left hand side it was evident the timing belt was erratic and starting rubbing against the center cover eating away the plastic. I can't get the crank pulley off since I couldn't hold it in place so i just took off the left and right covers.
The belt was on track on both sets, and looked in good shape. I turned the crank to line up the marks, and it looks as if one set jumped 2-3 teeth, but wait
I feel the belt and there is a weird slack to it, during parts of the revolution one side will have slack or will have tension while the other is vice versa.
I'm stumped at this point. But being frustrated and realizing that the center timing cover is junk at this point, I start ripping bits and bits off, and then I see it. The lower left idler pulley exploded. Not like Myogi's recent idler sprocket explosion, but the ball bearings were everywhere, explaining the marble-like noises. The roller was slanted and it was obvious that was the culprit.
That pulley caused the slack, the noises, maybe even the whining. At this point I have no idea whether timing did jump during the short 1/4 trek before i shut her down but at least now I have a plan of action.
I'm gonna replace that ONE idler pulley, reset the timing belt [line everything up] and then run a compression test. Test goes well and I get good readings from all cylinders, I'll buy a timing/waterpump kit and put her back together with a new radiator. Test comes back abysmal...well I feel at this point she'll be getting parted out or stripped at the least. Give me a couple hours to get the pics up, but if anyone has any advice, please post!
Here comes the pics.

Oh sorry, I ebayed an older idler pulley from a forester. It shipped out today. I'm gonna slap that sucker on and reset all the timing marks and such.
I WAS going to go borrow a compression tester from Autozone or Advance and do the compression test once the pulley was back on, but my brother suggested just starting it up - I should have a clear idea whether it shit itself or not. I also need to try to get my hands on the AC belt tensionor cus that sorta...rusted and broke on me too, lol.
If the pulley gets to me by this weekend, I should have a clear idea by then.

Update -
Got the crank pulley off with help from a 2x4 and a breaker bar and the starter, lol
Inspected and cleaned stuff off. The idler pulley exploding definitely helped in shutting down the motor, but i also found that the water pump did indeed seize, you can see the pics from the heat warping from the belt.
Got the belt off, but it'll take me a another week to prepare to finish her off and check everything. I just ebayed a cheap water pump to test, $23 free shipping from NY so that should be here in time. Gonna press the tensioner back down at work and get that ready to be put back in when i throw the timing belt back in. I aligned everything following warrior's awesome DIY so everything is ready to go when I go back next time.
Going back to see my car, it gets me so down. I hate that asshole of a car but I can't seem to let her go.

sorry to hear about your ride bro! hopefully she gets a clean bill of health and gets back on the road. gotta love stupid paint with stupid vinyls, single exit exhaust with cut outs for 2, 2 license plate spots just in case the driver feels like switching it up, and huge ass wheels.

Alright, just got back from working on the installation of replacement parts and initial startup.
As i said earlier, I sourced cheap used replacement waterpump and idler pulley for the time being. Installed those, and then installed the old timing belt as best as I could. No timing mark references so I was basically just going by feel. I got everything pretty tight and even across all rollers and cam pulleys, pulled my makeshift pin off my idler tensioner and started putting on the accessory belts.
Seeing as how I kept the radiatior out for the time being, there was no coolant running, and I closed off the trans fluid to the radiator into a closed loop. [lol, i didn't at first and started it up, ATF was spewing through the grill and lower bumper opening, like it was coughing up blood =X ].
Initial reaction to the start up, both from inside and from outside using the auto-starter.
It sounds fine, there was a little hesitation at first but that might've been due to it sitting around for almost 6 weeks with no cranking. I only wanted run it for small stints since there was no running coolant. The first startup which was from outside the car, hood up, with the autostarter; there was a knocking noise that went away almost immediately. The warmup idle settled and it sounded ok except for one little thing. Maybe it's cus i haven't heard my idle note for a month and a half or maybe something is actually wrong, but I couldn't sworn I was hearing the SLIGHTEST metal pinging noise. Valves bent?
I kept starting it up after short breaks, and it sounded fine, no limp mode, no struggling to stay running, just a mix of the usual piston slap im used and the occasional ping.
From inside the car on the last time testing, I could hear the slight pinging more obviously. I gave the motor a little gas, little blips, and it seemed to have power, no struggling no terrible crashing sounds.
What is my dilemma! what does it all mean!!! =[ - I want to install the radiator back[temporarily] to let it run longer to get a better idea, but can any of the Subaru OG's give me a thought process on what could be going on in the motor.

will it be ok to kinda just ghetto rig the radiator then?
When i took it apart, the bolts holding the fans on all sheared and well..the radiator support is fine, but yeah, I'll do that.

ghetto rigged the radiator, filled fluids ect ect.
started it up, let it get up to temp, and vented the radiator ect ect.
Definitely hear valve clicking and slight misfires. It basically sounds like a catless STi. let it run til it started sounding consistent then drove it around the block a couple of times. After having been without it for so long, I can't exactly tell if its down on power, but its definitely feeling different than before. I don't think I have the ability or will to fix the internal damage. It can run and drive, but it'll never be the same for me. I'll take a video tomorrow.
