View Full Version : jdm light install trouble

the diy and everything else ive searched isnt providing the answer..

on my driver side headlight i colormatched and wired like this:

http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t232/wakeboardingguy/DSCN1469.jpg

but when my low beams are on, the city lights, low beam and highs are on, but highs are on only dimly... and it works great in high beam what did i do wrong?
http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t232/wakeboardingguy/DSCN1473.jpg

the passenger side is more confusing as the colors are different, when i color-match these wires, only the high beams turned on and they were verrrry dim, all lights on the pass. side are. (is this just a new relay?)

http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t232/wakeboardingguy/DSCN1472.jpg

im lost on wiring that side...and fixing my high beams dimly lit on the driver side in low beam mode

first I want to say I thought I was the only one who cut the wire harness for the headlights.. I only did it because the passenger side I could not get it off at all and that's prying it and all.. after the back of the housing cracked I finally just cut the wires..

Also your wires are the same color as mine and as the DIY thread here and mine is a 1995.. double check the connection from the headlights.

trace the wire back from the harness on the headlight you might find what you did wrong.. it's very easy to connect the wrong wire.

can you tell me what color you connected to what color on the pass side?

First of all did your JDM headlight come with both the snap harnesses that come with the lights? mine only came with one so I just bypassed them.. having said that this is what I did.

on my passenger side I have these three wires:

Yellow/Blue
Red
Black/Yellow

on my JDM harness I have only 2 of the 4 connections connected my hibeams are grounded to the car so my HID's wont go off when I flip on the hi's

Anyways

nothing is connected to the Yellow/blue wire

for the Red wire it's connected to the red on the JDM headlight harness

Black/yellow to the black wire of the harness

Now if your JDM headlights are like mine the wires colors have faded a bit so you might have to clean them a little.

what about the city light? i have 4 wires from my snap thing and ones the city light

I did not wire my city light because it does nothing to light up the road. It's also not connected

so i found this wire runs to the other side, its black with a red stripe... the only way that my pass side lights recieve power is when i ground it, however, when i ground it, the power is VERY weak and my driver side high beams light up a bit

i dont see how this cord could be remotely affiliated with my driver side headlights

Sounds like you may have blown a fuse. Check your headlight fuse(s) to make sure they're good. They should be either 15 or 20 amp fuses in the fuse box under the hood near the LH strut tower. I've had this issue before due to some crummy housing that kept blowing the fuse and it did exactly this.

Sticky relay?

When you turn the light on you hear the relay under the hood in the fuse box click?

07-01-2009, 09:05 PM
my fuses are good and my relays click..

:smt017

heres where the other side of the cord comes out.. this is on the pass. side looks like its the lifeline to the whole setup

above wire starts here (from under car)

http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t232/wakeboardingguy/DSCN1477.jpg

runs along the bottom of the radiator and up to behind the driver headlight:

You say the light works when connected direct to the battery.. before what seems to be an edit... if you did nothing but just disconnect from the factory it seems like something is not right on the car end of the wires.. Check again for a blown fuse (I know it sounds odd)

And I know when I did not have something wired correct (before I got my hi's connected) My hi beam light would come on very dim with the low beams on. Relays can be pesky... sometimes they wont release or they will pull in with with a slight voltage. I've never heard of any headlight relay's on a subaru that have failed.

Headlight out light? hmm.. you must mean the hibeam indicator? Anyways I don't what else to say

07-01-2009, 10:33 PM
i have figured it out.. i need a place to join the red/blue wire from the pass side to my my mystery wire.. it works when i touch them together, or the mystery wire to the battery, but not when i join them directly... as then my drivers  side wont work,

07-01-2009, 10:35 PM
well everythnig in above post + the fact my projector on pass side stays on with high but i can live with that

Hrm. I have some pictures of my JDM headlight(s) wiring from when I did it. However, mine did come with the JDM harnesses and my wires matched exactly. However, I'll dig up the pictures and post them anyhow as maybe they will be of some help?

Okay. Here is the driver side. I know it isn't fantastic, but it's the only image I can find at the moment. The red wire taking off to the side is going to my blinker...

WTF?!?!? i finally figure this out and now the mothers dont fit!!?!? :smt009

on the pass side the clip closest to the fender wont line up with the hole, its too far out.

and on the driver's side the height adjuster is hitting the radiator support bar!!

Well, the radiator support beam (cross member?) is an easy fix with the quick tap of a grinder. The other, however, might be a little more difficult. I suppose there are two choices here... You could either heat and "stretch" the tab to reach (A heat gun or torch should do the trick. BUT BE CAREFUL!!!) Or, you could re-drill your hole and use another bolt and nut to hold it in place. Personally, I'd go with the former as that way you won't lose your current bolt hole and you could always toss the stocks back in.

Methinks your car was wrecked at one point. I can get a pic of my wiring tomorrow. Mine came with the proper harnesses. The wires are colored different before the harness versus after, I remember this.

i finally got done, wiggled it into place, thanks 1-2-3-4 and eekay for your help, pwt too

now my pass. blinker bulb is out so i get to take it back out tomorrow, lol

Sure thing, man. Glad to hear you got your projectors installed. You'll notice a difference immediately. Next step, a 35W HID kit... Trust me, you'll love that. :)

when you said clip and wont fit you mean the little screw thing that the headlight pushes into near the fender? I had that issue too for the passenger side.. I checked on carfax and this car has been in 3 fender benders.. two of them in MA and one in NY

lol too many pictures to load up while my cell is connected to my laptop out here.

ha i wiggle them in but holy crap i finally got them..

Next up for you sir Zues, is a HID projector retrofit.

eekay
07-02-2009, 04:52 PM
Poo on the retrofit (unless you have inspections.) It's nowhere near worth the trouble.

Eh. I'm just as happy with my HID kit (5000K Crystal Clear, which seems to be what you're using also?) on a non-retrofitted, JDM light pattern. I'm not talking about the HID, simply the pattern. I don't worry about it at all.

I had an HID kit in the stock JDM projectors for a while and yeah, they work alright, but I wanted the wider beam and bixenon capability of FX35's.

Ah. Makes sense. I like the separate bulbs, personally. Although, I have thought about modding the pattern plate inside my JDMs by simply filing down the current cut-off and adding a new one (As the "plate" isn't flippable.) I'll see what I can do. Probably post pics or something of the process (if I succeed, that is. :) )

maybe i'll get a retrofit done in the future but for now (after boot camp) its really going to be exterior and suspension...

with the exception of hids of course

I didn't mention the 3000k HID projector fogs or the Hella 500 driving lights I have.

Wow after looking at that headlight fitment I must say that the unibody and rad support of that car are even more screwy than mine. I smacked a tree and pulled the rad support back up with a block and tackle and I can STILL fit one piece headlights. I hate to think what must've happened to that poor vehicle.

Not a problem, bro. I have a pretty good idea. However, images and explanations always help. Thanks for not forgetting! :)

Nice. I also have the JDM fogs with 5000K HID's in those too. However, I have them aimed extremely low just in case. Let's see some pictures!

i think it may have just been me being impatient and frustrated, they fit fine now that i took a breather.. plus the carfax is clean so i think/ hope im good

For those that have the JDM fogs with HID's what size bulb did you use and where did you mount the ballast?

eekay
07-03-2009, 10:52 AM
The bulbs are H3's and I mounted the ballasts up behind the bumper. You can really mount them anywhere, but you don't want them getting too hot or too wet. I figured behind the bumper would be the best place.

1-3-2-4
07-03-2009, 11:12 AM
Oh I was told the H3 was too long to fit behind the projector part.. On my BK I just have the projector type and not the reflector/projector type like the BD

eekay
07-03-2009, 11:41 AM
Ah. Okay. I'm not sure about the BK non-reflector fogs. Sorry. I'm sure someone around here does though.

You talking about putting HIDs in a reflector housing? That's rugged. Don't be surprised if you get pulled over A LOT.

Yeah, personally I would never do it, but I was just pointing out that the H3C HID bulb will fit because it is shorter than the typical H3 bulb.

The H3c is one overpriced piece of poo ever..

I rather just stick with the standard H3 55W
