I'm pretty much convinced that "L" just stands for Legacy/Liberty and the "7" is just an upside down L. It's probably way off but it's the simplest explanation I can think of.

The L is most likely legacy, as the JDM impreza badges are i's. The 7 itself is a repeat of the L, though the 7 stars of subaru would be another good guess.

Why do we put it on our car? Because we can, and the grills tend to like alot nicer than all the american offerings.
