Does the whole tranny case have to be opened for the center diff or just the rear housing? Also does anyone make a affordable unit?
nothing is wrong with mine just curious.. seems to be a crap load of front diffs out and rear but dont see a lot for the center.

I'f I'm not mistake, and I could be, the transmission has to be take apart to get to the center diff, since the whole body that houses the gears splits in half.
To answer your second question, there are only a few companies that do center differentialls, there is the STi Heavy Duty Viscous unit and then there is the Cusco Tarmac unit which splits F/R distribution 35%/65%. There is also Watanabe Service (through japanparts.com) that has a conversion piece for RWD.

Those are Front differentials not centers differentials.
