Has anyone ever tried to swap in a different trans, like for a 240sx, to convert a legacy to RWD.
The reason i'm asking is:
My trans is fried and i priced a used one installed for $1,450. But i really miss my 240sx, and i happen to have an SR trans just laying around.
So....... Thoughts?????

eaisy as hell. look in the diy on sl-i for how to take tranny apart. remove the front diff. than got to rs25.com and search for the welding of center diff. than you will have a rwd scooby.

what do you mean by fried? these 4EAT transmissions are relatively simple transmissions, if you know your way around a wrench you could probably rebuild it yourself, i seem to remember rebuild kits being around $300

what are you doing with your old trans? if junking it, pull your solenoids/valve body, ill take them off your hands.

An SR20 trans wont bolt up however people who convert to RWD oftentimes go with Nissan rear ends.

I find it funny that the SVX owner is the one that knows about rebuilding Subaru 4EATs, those cars were somewhat notorious for wearing out transmissions.

Define fried, as these transmissions are fairly hard to kill.

Seems like a lot of work to convert it to RWD, then you may as well buy a honda.

?? I can't think of a single RWD car Honda has ever brought over to the US? (Unless you count the NSX?)

Cheap out and ghetto rig it by disconnecting the front axles and plugging the holes. :P Insta-RWD.

S2000, duh!

By the way, to the OP, there is at least one SR20DET powered RWD GC Impreza that I've heard of. You could always go that route with the Legacy!

i love it when people do crazy swaps like the 2jz twin turbo 69 camaro? wicked
i have seen a rwd leg wagon on here i think his conversion included a s13 240 drivetrain? i remember reading that he cut the bell housing off the s13 tranny and welded on the subaru one to make the starter fit... ill try to find it.

So let's see

Get a 01 rs tranny(LSD)
Crack it open and remove the front diff
Weld the center diff

RWD fun?

Now question- do I need to remove the front axles?

Please confirm this for me. I needs RWD for next summer

for the fonrt axels. get a plate to cover the tranny holes, and cut the front shafts into nubs. this way you will still have your abs.

Can't i just do the same with the other side of the axle just cut so i can use it as the cover for the tranny?

If I cut whats inside the red box

and leave about half and inch from the boot uncut

U think that would work?

***Yes i know that's not a Suby axle, but its just to get my idea across :D

So you'll have two joints on each side flopping around when the wheels are turning. Niiiiiice. :smt021

If you just cut the stubs themselves then you can effectively just plug the holes with them. You still need a cover or something to make sure they don't work themselves out of the holes.

just make a cover for the tranny. as for the cv axel take it apart. i.e. just have the outside nub for abs. when its all tight it will not flop around, if you did it on the tranny side yes it would flop around. so your tranny has the axels that go into it? i know on mine the tranny has the nubs sticking out, so i would not have to put covers over them.
