Exhaust question

hey guys, maybe im way off on this.

but i seem the remember the exhaust on the wifes legacy just comes out of each head and goes back.(i think, im pretty sure)

but some, like on my fathers legacy outback(06ish?) one side comes forward and loops around to the other side of the motor, it goes right under the timing/accessory belts, then back from there.

my question is, why? and are they interchangeable?

the manifold on my wifes is damaged, ive fixed it for the time being with JB weld, went to the junkyard and the only exhaust manifolds i can find have that loop around front thing, and when you look down you can see an o2 sensor right in front, i could block that i guess...

the straight ones are Equal length headers and the looped one are unequal lenght so when someone types UL or EL headers thats what they refer to. as far compatability you have to be more specific on what car/engine you have and what you were able to find.

It depends on the exhaust configuration but the stock Subaru exhaust is UEL, hence the notorious boxer rumble. Stock I believe the exhaust comes back from the head, the drivers side makes a hard turn over to meet up with the passenger side, then they both bend back towards the rear of the car. This is a huge choke point in power. A Borla or Borla knockoff header will bring the drivers side around the front and come back to join the passenger side in a collecter, with no choke point. This is also UEL. The equal lenght headers tend to come straight back from the heads and join together on the passenger side however the passenger runners are a lot longer before the collector to make it an equal length design.

i have a 97 2.5gt.

the only subarus at the yard i visited were newer 3rd gen legacy's the one in particular i was looking at was a 2.2, and it had the wrap around exhaust that you could see as you looked down at the front of the motor.

and i noticed that the headers i find on ebay and such also have the one side that wraps around the front of the motor.

so i guess my questions are

1. does the 2.2 exhaust manifold bolt up to the 2.5?
2. is the 2.2 exhaust more restrictive than the 2.5?
3. if i were to look at getting one of these from the yard, would the manifold/pipe flange be in the same place as my 97?
4. i wonder if theres an o2 bung in the rear(like my 97 has one on each side) or if one side uses the o2 sensor that is right up front on the newer legacies.

once agian this is a half baked idea, and im just to cheap to buy the knockoff headers...

If the 2.2L engine is a dual port exhaust (ie. 4 exhaust ports, 2 per head) then it'll have the same exhaust manifold as a 2.5L engine.

I have no idea what exhaust manifold you're seeing when you are looking at 00-04 Legacies, they have the same exhaust manifold as your 97 2.5GT.

In a week or so I will have my stock header off the car. It'll be up for sale if you're interested (it doesn't have heat shields anymore).

hey, yeah, let me know about those stockers... maybe im confused(good possibility) it could be the ones im seeing at the yard are newer... they have the same exaust setup at my fathers legacy, wich i thought was 3rd gen... but like i said, perhaps im confused.

ok...so now that i have re-watched the SLI.net opening scrren, i have realized that my fathers is a 4th gen, so the few i found in the yard must be a 4th gen... derrrrrrrrrrrrrr....

is it 5 oclock yet?

from what youre describing, it's either the turbo manifold or those are the EL stock headers on the newer legacy's, part of what bumps up the power to 175 HP

i m not sure if questions have been answered here or not though the 2.2 turbo header will not bolt onto the EJ25D , i ve attempted this as the inlet for the water pump gets in the way , the manifold touches the platstic and will not connect properly
