Hi Guys - haven't posted in a while. I have a friend looking for a 2000 to 2009 Legacy or Outback. Can folks tell me good years, which ones to avoid, what to look for?

I know some of the earlier ones had the dreaded head gasket issues worse than later years I have listed. Any other issues on crash safety, recalls, other idiosyncracies?

Any information would be much appreciated!

Regards,
David

Head gaskets shouldn't be a problem on anything 03+

The biggest difference is the 05+ underwent a massive design change - if you get anything older than 05, go for 04 as it's the last year of the 3rd gen and has all the bells and whistles.

05+ introduced a true GT with the turbo engine too. approx 225hp.

if it's 00-04 make sure it isn't silver. They are the bad ones...

Thanks for the info.

You are joking about the silver paint or were there really problems like with those Fords from the early nineties where the paint just started flaking off after about 8 years?

My 95 seems to be holding up quite well - it's bubbling a bit on the front fenders but now that I live in California (Bay Area) I'm living a lower standard and indoor parking is not as easy as it used to be in Colorado so there you have it...

He's kidding about the silver. He has a silver car and they're fairly common on this board. ;)

250hp :smt002 ....id stay away from the 05 model year specifically. Many problems that were worked out in the later years.
