ok so i have a 98 gt 2.5 dohc ect. my car has a MAF intake system, i bought a k&n for the stock air box but now i want to do a little more with the intake. i want to keep the stock snorkus and air box/ filter holder and get rid of the tube and tourqe box crap. will the ebay intaek work and just fit with the box? i think iv seen it before but i just cant find it? not sure if i know how to explain this..

yeah, all you need is the piping.. the ebay ones work great.. any from a 2.2 or 2.5L impreza, legacy, etc.

but depending on what one you get, you may need to stretch some hoses to fit...

You will soon find out that the torque box is not crap at all, it's actually better to find some way to modify the stock system then getting the SRI. According to what I've heard the MAF can have problems working with the SRI. If you delete the torque box at the throttle body, you will loose low end torque, I've had the short ram intake on my car, I thought it was the best way to go, but then I got a replacement stock intake for mine and realized that a modified stock system would be better, you be able to have the high end with the torque.

But here's another question? How much have you modified your exhaust? That's where you get the most gains.

ya iv felt the differences iv done all this with my old impreza 2.5. but i think ill like it better, it dosent take away that but from the low end. and im also doing a snorkus delete so that will also help with flow

Actually it's quite noticable, but that's just my opinion, here's a thread I started about the torque box itself:

This stuff is getting my creative wheels turning... Here's what I am thinking: a vacuum based "pre-charge" that is released using the PCV valve in some way, or maybe using a relayed valve to a button. It could be charged up using the engine as a compressor somehow, then release a surge at first throttle. Can anybody help me build on this idea? Could this be achieved somehow? Like a startup boost. How would I keep it from just blasting the engine with a super-lean mixture though... I may just have my head up my ass, but it would be fun to experiment... :twisted: :twisted:

Hmmmmm... that would be interesting, but I can't seem to come up with a picture of what your actually trying to do. It sounds like launch supercharging or something.

yeah, even I am not sure what it would look like yet, but that isn't going to stop me from messing with my car haha. Maybe I could get a couple of those little breather cone filters and pipe them in close to the throttle body with a diaphragm that shuts them after there is vacuum in the intake pipe? idk, just thinking out loud... I am picturing something that functions like a secondary butterfly on an old carbureted engine, but works differently, of course. No extra fuel, just less dP for easier breathing.

I've got the eBay pipe, stock airbox, K&N... lost nothing low that is noticable, feels better in the upper end

I've also got a Neon Coil pack, dont know if that takes away most of the low end loss some others have felt...

there you go. the pipe needs a slightly longer or a 45 degree coupler to match up to the stock air box

I am trying to combine this other post into this intake thread. Have a couple questions about an intake mod. This post was originally made by "Plays_with_toys" member. (copied and pasted it here, but pics didn't go in, here is post link:

My question is:
the big curved black hose just before metal engine intake part looks decent on stock subaru. the restriction may be in the "ribbed" part between airbox and big curved part. could you just put in the big 3 inch patch part and use the stock big curved black hose? this would eliminate the ribbed part, and you wouldn't have to buy the big hose part, just the parts that this mod calls for you to buy at car parts store anyways. thanks, Nate

Everyone has seen these things on ebay. The $20 ebay intakes.

A thread on NASIOC (click here) shows that a 10hp and 10ft/lb of torque increase in the low-midrange RPMs can be had. So when one showed up for dirt cheap, I jumped on it, and went to install it.



Ok, first of all, these are designed for "98-99" legacy's, from the titles on ebay. I haven't yet found a real difference between these newer engines and my 1996 2.2. There is one thing though about this intake. It has (2) vacuum lines coming off of it, and the stock intake has (3).

List of things you will need:
1/2" T connector
1/2" elbow with male threaded end
3" to 3" flexible coupling (rubber) (the metal clamps are included)
1' of 3/4" hose (*** I did not need this, but the insurance of having this hose is worth the extra $1.30)
Total cost of extra materials should be around $12.



First of all, here's the engine bay stock:



Take out the stock intake piping, and remove the MAF/top half of the airbox (you'll need to unpluge the MAF). There are 4 vacuum lines you will need to disconnect. Two on the back, one near the bends that lead to the intake manifold. Just disconnect it at the PCV junction. The last one is the biggest hose that connects near the MAF. Here is what it should now look like:



Next I did a test fit to see how everything would bolt together. I could tell that some pushing and shoving would be needed until the rubber couplers were in the right position for the tubing to go in correctly.

The 3" to 3" couple is too larg for both the intake piping and the MAF pipe. You should notice this immediately, however, because of its soft rubber, it will contract down and around each pipe with no problem. You will need to drill a 1/2" hole in the middle of the coupler. Use small drill bits leading up to the 1/2" bit. The rubber is strange to work (it molds itself around the bit, make sure to work the bit in and out until you can get a round hole.



Next insert the elbow so that the threaded end is out. Make sure it fits snug, and does not protrude too deeply into the tubing itself. (you can remove this now for an easier install later)



Install the included blue vacuum lines where the PCV valve line you took off went (its a tight fit, since the included lines are 3/8" and all the stock are 1/2") Install the T where the two valve cover lines come up, and install another blue line on the T as well (another tight fit)



Use the metal clamp that is on the end of your stock piping to clamp the blue coupler included with the kit to the intake manifold. The other larger metal clamp included with the kit should go around the larger diameter piping of the intake. Also connect the 3" coupler at the other end. I tried to keep this coupler as close to the edge of the piping as possible. Thread the white elbow into the 3/4" tubing for the Idle Air Bypass. It should thread in tightly.Then plug this into the hole you drilled. Attach the maf and clip it onto the filter box, then tighten down the coupler. Again, move the intake around until the fitment is right. Plug in the remaining blue vacuum lines to the intake, reset the ECU (pull negative battery cable, hold down brake for 15-25 seconds, reattach battery cable) and enjoy.





So as for performance... A little louder than a simple snorkusectomy, and well, no real power improvement. I haven't reset the ECU yet though, so I will do that today and repost my results. If anything, its engine bling for cheap.

***Update: I reset the ECU after making this post, and let 'er rip. New impressions... Holy torque change batman. Where the car might bog down a little from a stop light, the car doesn't bog, even on a rough shift it'll add a kick of acceleration. There is some better get up and go between 2600 and 4000 rpms. Now the improved acceleration is only slight, but it is a perceptable change for the better.

EDIT: Update 2007- check the welds on your bungs to make sure they are still intact upon receipt of your intake and you should probably check everytime you do a new air filter. Mine has started to seperate, I plan to patch it up with some JB weld/quick steel. No biggie, but something to check for.

see the black rubber hose part in pic? could you just put that part in? the part that is blue here looks ok in the stock system (is black in stock system), the stock system has no ribs in this part (blue part here) and looks big, maybe the bend in it has a litte more of an elbow bend to it, though, I don't know. what do you guys think?
