How strong is BE 5spd tranny?

i have a 2000 limited gt that i just got (will post pics this weekend prob) but i also have a chance to get an 06 wrx longblock pretty decently priced and was wondering how strong is my stock tranny. can i use it till i get a wrx or sti tranny maybe? prob wrx unless an sti tranny comes up at an unbelievable price. but anyway so will my tranny work? how much can our trannies handle?

yeah i saw that, but not many swapped or turboed be models so i dont know whether to trust how strong it is. thanks for the input!

well...if you think you'll need it, maybe you should buy one. Plenty of WRX owners have broken their transmission putting down way less power than my car though.

Some people will disagree with me, but there's nothing really that much better about the wrx 5 speeds, they still use the same basic case design, same width 3-5th gears (I'm not sure if the BE's ever got the RA width 1-2 gears...but those trannys break too). It's the same basic 5 speed that subaru has used in all of their models since the beginning of the 90's.

The pull type clutch on turbo models supposedly distributes the power more evenly on the clutch face, vs. the push-type of the n/a transmission. Though the USDM wrx stuff is a little worse because they use taller gearing, which means slower boost onset and increased strain on the gears as power is put through them. I can accelerate pretty easily on the highway in 5th w/ the n/a 4.11 FD, vs. a wrx having to downshift to 4th w/ its 3.54/3.9/3.7FD (depending on year) to get the same acceleration.

I forgot to add, that with all that said, I wouldn't be surprised if my transmission ever blows. Always have a backup plan for that scenario. It really boils down to how to drive.

With my luck it'll go at the time when it will cost me the most inconvinience. :roll:

honestly it if its a 5 speed it sucks just as much and any other 5 speed as far a strength (unless you go to strait cuts). if you dont drive like an idiot you shouldnt have any problems.

about a year and a half, about 10k miles, a couple of autocrosses and rallycrosses thrown in.
