How much for new Belts?

You guys have any idea how much it should cost (for a mechanic) to change out the timing belts and other belts?

I have looked at the timing belt and it has cracks on the in the grooved sections. Not sure if that is normal but I have not changed it once since I have had the car and I sit at 85K, IS it time for new belts??

I called one auto shop and the quoted me $750! to change out the belts tensioner, parts and labor. That seemed way high. Is it?

Timing belt change is approx. $600-850 depending on the shop.

Timing belt Tensioner is pretty expensive some stealers charge over $200 for it.
Accessory Belt is around $20-40
Cam/Crank Seals are $6+ a pop
Waterpump is $120-180

Labor is what gets you.

I did all my maintenance for $550 (Canadian ) without labor. Everything above + crank pulley

Its about 3-4 hours including the bleeding of the coolant.

Make sure they change the water pump when they have the timing belt off!

I had no idea changing the timing belt was such a process! I thought it was just the belt that turned everything and that was it. Now there is water pumps and coolant good grief!

You CAN do just a timing belt. But because you have to take off the timing belt covers and everything else (water pump, front seal etc) is in there too, it makes sense to do it all at once.

all the other belts that drive the alternator, powersteering & AC are all outside the timing belt cover, and can be replaced just by loosening the belt tensioner and installing new belts.

Think about it this way - once it's done (the right way with the right parts and by a good mechanic), the car is good for another 60k.

Read this, then come back if you think you'd want to go back in there again when a waterpump or something else fails right after you do the timing belt.

It's time to do all that if you're doing a timing belt. Don't argue it, just accept it because of the poor lost souls that have come before all of us. :)

yeah.. it can be a lot of money at once. these cars definitely like to do that to ya.. but yeah, like they said.. don't wanna go in a second time.. or else you will basically just be paying double for nothing when the water pump decides to go. just save up and get it all done at the same time.

Look at it this way.. least your timing belt hasn't snapped on you.. mine did that. Was NOT cheap.

Just make sure you're ordering parts for your SOHC engine. Digi has a DOHC so the part#s for timing belt are different.

Right.. better off replacing the stuff before they break.. ask me how i know.

Either spend the $500 +- now.. or $2k +- later after it breaks and possibly mangles your valves / piston rings.. your call.

Maintenance schedule calls for timing belt service @ 105k, so there is definitely no emergency. It also specifies an inspection of timing belts every 30k - THAT you will want to do soon - so you can feel comfortable about the next 20k miles and avoid a catastrophe.

i want to chime in here and clear my own fuzziness on your question

what process did you go through to check your timing belt? from the way you worded your question it sounded like you were talking about your accessory belts ie alternator, power steering , and AC compressor (the whole grooved thing is what made me think about this the timing belt has teeth) just wanted to clarify

Labor for changing accessory belts should be minimal - I can't imagine it be more than a shop hour.
