View Full Version : 17" wheels and tire size for GT

I just got some MY05 LGT wheels for my car, they came with the stock RE92's on 'em... The tires are 215/45-17. Anyone know if those are the right overall diameter for a GT? Was told to run 205/50-17. I was wondering if the extra width would make up for the smaller height ratio.

Any help would be greatly appreciated :-D

Old Diameter: 24.87"
New Diameter: 24.61"

With the new setup your speedo will read 1.052% too fast.

So it's 1/4 inch difference in diameter which means 1/8" lower ride height. It wouldn't be a deal breaker for me.

figure maybe 2MPH? I had 24.1" dia. tires on before which showed 4MPH faster than what I was going...

Thanks Mitch for the help.

actually i checked the dia. I am currently running, and its 24.9" not that it matters... If stock dia. is supposed to be 24.87".

Your speedo will read "optimistically" higher the faster you go anyway.
Past 70mph most speedos read too fast.

One of those irony's in life is that more than likely your speedometer is not perfectly calibrated anyway so there's probably + 2-4% margin of error, the faster you go, the greater the error.

Take my Jetta for example, stock tire size is 205/50/15. The correct +2 size is 205/40/17 (1.67% larger) however the ride is very rough. I went with 215/40/17's which are 3.03% larger. I happened to have a GPS one day and on a high speed pass of 120mph the speedo indicated a hare over 120mph, if just barely over. In my case it looks like my odometer was optomistic by 3% so it all evened out. That was at double the typical highway speed limit so @ 60mph the difference is purely academic.

If you look at some of the Top Speed shootouts like Motor Trend does you'll see most car's speedos are optomistic to some degree. In any case even a 5% difference isn't going to cause any problems or get you a speeding ticket. Its width that can cause rubbing issues, especially when the car is loaded down.

**Ninja edit** Huffer, you beat me to it with speedo error !!

My speedo actually reads more accurate with larger diameter tires...(according to those radar things they set out on the roads, I don't usually have the cops check :D)

The 05 LGT rims with 215 R17 tires? yes, they will.

Most speedos are a little "fast" intentionally. The laws basically state that the odometer must read "at least" the actual mileage, and within a certain percentage of actual. Since the odo and the speedo both work off the same signal, they both read the same, right or wrong.

I want to put MY05 LGT wheels on my 2003 Legacy L Special Edition Wagon, but I havn't found any good pics to get an idea of how they look.

badbasser98 can you post some pics of your car?

Also, what is the weight difference between the stock MY00 - MY03 18 spoke mesh wheel and the MY05 LGT wheels?

I don't have the LGT wheels on yet, waiting for snow and ice to go away...

for pics Click here (http://www.sl-i.net/FORUM/viewtopic.php?t=726)

in that thread you can see a quick chop that shows the LGT wheels though. They will look much better when they are really on the car. The chop does them no justice.

The LGT rims will fit fine on the BD/BG and BE/BH chassis. I was running them on my BD with a decent drop and no rubbing:

You got me, one and the same.

The LGT rims look incredible on the earlier generation legs. I'm still deciding what I want to replace them, probably going to be rockin' some 98 RS 5-spokes until I can settle on another 17" setup.
