I bought a pair of headers on eBay (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayI ... 2759.l1259 (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=220446413702&_trksid=p2759.l1259)) and they don't fit my 97 gt. The lower passenger side tube does not wrap far enough around the oil filter so I can't even bolt them all the way to the head. They are very good quality elsewhere though...has anyone else had this problem before? The only thing I can really think of is getting a smaller oil filter, I think I just have a fram filter on right now....
please let me know if anyone has had this problem or has a solution for me! Thank you!

Never seen that brand/seller before. I suggest sending them back.

some are designed on the newerish 00+ style engines that use the smaller filter, and the large filters dont fit

Yeah, I would send them back. I bought a pair of headers for my '97 LGT off of speedyracer.com and they sound really good and they were cheaper as well ($158.00 shipped)...That is odd that they don't fit because they look exactly the same as the ones that I put on my car. It even says on the website designed for 1997-2005 2.5LGT? :smt017

i checked speedyracer.com and all they have now are headers for 00+ 2.5's. That must be what mine are because they are SO CLOSE to fitting it hurts! I just hope the eBay vendor will take them back.

have you tried the slimmer filter that the 00+ use? most of the headers were modeled of the 00+ engine design w/ smaller filter

I've looked but I can't find any filter thats slimmer than the one I already have...all the filters have the same part number, no matter what year of car up until 03. http://www.knfilters.com/oil_filter/subaru_legacy.aspx

Subaru OEM filters are now smaller than a coffee cup. P/N: 15208AA12A

The headers off of speedyracer.com will fit your car. I have a 1997 LGT and they say they are for a 2000 and newer on the site, but they bolt on directly...

cool thanks guys, the eBay store still hasn't gotten back to me but I'll call my Subaru dealer and try to get my hands on a smaller filter.

I just talked to my Subaru parts department and they have never heard of different size filters. He says that there are only 2 sizes of filters for legacies, one for the H-4's and one for the H-6's.

Your parts guy is a kid then. They changed the size of the filters back in 04 to the small ones. Prior, they were much larger.

If they looked they would see that the P/N for the oil filters changed about 5 times since 1995. Morons!

i know the napa gold filter for my 3rd gen is tiny as hell. go by the napa store and look. if you look closely at the pics the bend around the filter is more than all the other ones i have seen. it might be just me. oh pat its good to see you on here again. been almost a year since heard anything from you. also we haveing another legacy meet this year.

wrap your header. you will heat that filter up. or go get the napa gold filter for my car. its skinny compared to that, also its not fram crap. wix make napa wilters. wix is part of amsoil.

Aaaaaghhh! Fram is the crap!

Another thought - you could get an oil filter relocation kit.

Brandon- i don't think your filter could be any skinnier, this one is just barely the size of the o-ring mount. but i will go back to getting gold filters next time!

Huffer- do you know of any good brands that don't cost to much money? all I could really find were GReddy and something on Summit racing for way more than I have to spend.

Question I will order my headers this coming friday but I have a question my car is older (1995) and I wonder will I have the oil filter issues as well?

My current oil filter is a Bosh 3310.. I see Bosh also makes another filter called the 72181 that says fits my car too.. Anyone know?

And I guess you can pick header wrap up at an auto parts store?

the 3310 is the "older" style filter that's bigger, the other one is probably the smaller filter. The smaller filter is moreso for turbo subbies as subaru put out a notice that some wrx's were heating up the larger oil filter a little to much due to the proximity of the filter to the manifold/header.

For purolators the 14460 is the bigger filter, and the 14612 is the smaller filter for turbo cars. If any of you guys still want to use the smaller filter but would like a little more oil capacity, you can get the 14610 filter which is the same diameter as the 14612 but is 1/2" taller - it's made for Hondas/acuras but is used quite often but sti/wrx guys. Both have the same psi setting for the relief valve.

speaking of purolator.. do they still make oil filters? for the last two oil changes I've had to use Bosh because I can't find purolator filters at autoZone or advance auto.

So get the L14612? and it seems like it's in stock at advance auto

purolators are all I use, my oil pressure/temp gauge seems to respond quicker with that than even the expensive KN/Mobil 1 filters. They're in stock at advanced auto and pepboys I think...autozone doesnt carry purolator for some reason - which sucks since they have a special going on this month for Castrol syntec + KN filter for $28 (autozone is the only one that carries german castrol 0w30, which is what my car seems to like better than the other synthetics I've used in it). The other cars I do oil changes on now all get KN filters since I've stocked up on GC  .

Anyway, just get the bigger sized oil filter. That was all I used when I was N/A and never had a problem with it, with stock, UEL, and EL headers. I have a couple of spare Purolator 14460's and Ill be using that on the turbo engine this coming oil change just because the weather will be colder and I don't beat on the car as much as I used to, plus theyre already here .

And Bosch is fine too. Actually, if you do the severe maintenance schedule (like 3-4months/3500-3750miles), you don't really have to get the most expensive, most bling oil filter, or even the most expensive oil for that matter. The frequency of the oil changes pretty much ensures the oil won't have time to get severely broken down/dirty...a reliable oil filter brand and good quality (not necessarily *expensive*) oil is more than sufficient.

lol.. you say get the bigger sized filter but given he had issues with his headers and his is a 97 I would be in the same issue I think as him So I think you meant to say the turbo filter?

the funny thing is from my 95 to the 00 legacy it seems to use the same filter size :-/ I think before I buy a filter I will order the headers and see if it fits or not in the first place before I change the filter

also is it just me or do the header ports look bigger on the stock over the knock off?

Huffer

If you buy OEM all Subs use the same oil filter now except the H6 engines. Turbo/NA, makes no difference in OEM part numbers now - and they are all the small size - smaller than the Bosch 3310.

I would get it from the dealer but I figure like all things from the dealer they want $10+ for the filter? I never bothered to check I just ask for crush washers and that's it.

Huffer

Buy them online, much cheaper. Usually find a deal for $4 a filter. Or you can just run the cheaper Bosch with the newer part#.

I ran the old style filter with knock off borla headers and never had a problem. I said, use the old filter unless you really have a problem with clearance. There seems to be an issue with the new jig theyre using for those headers, the bend around the oil filter is much smaller than on the older headers. I don't think it will hurt if you bend the header bend a little more to get more oil filter clearance...I know a couple of guys on NASIOC having this issue and solving it that way.

Oh and a lot of turbo guys don't really trust the new Subaru filters (blue ones) because subaru switched manufacturers and theyre not made in Japan anymore (I think its the same guys that make FRAM, theyre made in the USA). There was a rush to horde the black roki filters before subaru switched over to the new part no.

boy just belt them, eh? they are that thin? haha nice to know..

And yeah I remember the switching over to the filters just about all Subaru sites talked about it and the rush to get the filters.

hmm I just noticed something the oil filter I had on about two oil changes ago (I keep some old filters)

STP S2869 is way smaller then the Bosh or the Purolator filter I picked up today it's OEM Subaru sized should anyone want to check it out.

*edit

I take it back the purolator is tiny.. OEM Subaru style now.. header should fit without issue.

had the same issue with filters this week after i changed from borlas to replicas. fram doesnt fit. bosch will but u need to loosen ur headers to fully remove it. MOBILE 1 filter works perfect!
