Hello all,

So I was driving home from work today, and downshifted as I approached a red light. I down shifted into 3rd, only to find nothing! It was like there was nothing in the space that 3rd gear should be. After a quick panic, It did go into second fine, and then back into third on the up shift. Completely weirded out, I kept an eye on it, but luckily it didn't happen again at the next stop. It did happen once more while I was approaching a turn lane at a highway intersection. It was night, so no one was coming. I had a bit of time to kind of inspect what was going on while I was coasting. The only thing I cam up with was that it wasn't working...

Once I got home and parked, I went through the gears, and they were all clicking into place like normal. If it helps, the shifter is already majorly loose. Like its in neutral even if in gear. I think that is all bushing related, but could it make for the disappearing third gear problem? Help would be appreciated before I have to work tomorrow so I don't accidentally do something worse to it.

Thanks!

Shifter bushings.

Consider some kartboy replacements... $30 from Oakos Auto or $155 with their short shifter:

most of the looseness is the knukle that connects the linkage to tranny is shot. and can be very hard to engage 3rd and sometimes 4th

Yes. 3rd gear was always a pain, but never forth. Anyway, is there a way to get a replacement? Also, Will the bushings designed for a 1998 Legacy fit? Thats the oldest year I could find.

yep.. I forgot the part number but sometimes it's hard for me to get back into 4th when downshifting shifter is sloppy as hell but I can deal with it for now.

Would this fit without (extensive) modifications?

I looked under the car, and found that there were no bushings to speak of. I assume it comes with some from the factory, but there was nothing there.
