hey, im chasing the oil leak on my 97gt causeing it to smoke at highway speeds(80ish)
i know i need valve cover gaskets, and have checked out the DIY write up in the DIY section bought a set off ebay for 25 shipped, and also need at least a couple front seals so im looking at ordering them, might as well do them all while im in there.

now, i just changed the oil on it yesterday and noticed that the flywheel/flexplate(wich is wich?at/mt?)is clean, can i make the assumption that the rear main must not be leaking to terribly if at all?

i know the guy i bought it from did swap the motor, and i would like to think he did that while he was there..but who knows.

cheers fellas. :smt026

I wouldn't say that the flywheel [for mt] or flexplate [for at] is an indication that the rear main seal isn't leaking. if you think about it, when the engine is running, the flywheel is spinning 700rpm at idle, up to around 3500rpm during regular driving, and up to about 6500rpm if you wind it out, so it will tend to keep itself clean just by flinging the oil off and away.

my car was having the same issue as yours, it was leaking oil out the back of the engine and dripping it right on to the cat. Stinky. Then the head gaskets failed lol. So, I just pulled the engine and replaced every gasket and seal I could get to. I also removed the oil pump, tightened down the screws on the back of it [they were loose, pretty common] and re-sealed it, pulled, cleaned and resealed the oil pan, and replaced the plastic oil separator cover on the back of the engine with the updated metal one since it was leaking as well. End result? 152k miles and 0 leaks.

yeah.. i think im trying to be optimistic about the rear seals not leaking, cause i dont want to pull the motor...but that flexplate(thanks!) is clean...like real clean, not greasy or grimey at all. i guess ill just have to wait for my valve cover gaskets and front seals and we will see what happens.
