if its a phase II ej25 than yes it will work. while its out do the headgaskets with cosmetic gaskets.

Maybe you should see what the problem is first.

ill have to find out what phase it is
and i m just going on what my dad is telling me to do about it
right now we dont have the time to tear it apart it would just be easier to put a new engine in

2000 Impreza 2.5L motor is a Phase 2 EJ25 SOHC. It does NOT have a MAF, instead it has a MAP that reads the air at the throttle body. If your motor is MAF equipped you will need to use parts of your motor and parts of the Impreza motor. If that is the case it might be a good idea to only use the Impreza longblock, or just the shortblock assuming your heads aren't damaged.

we'll have to check in to that
and my dad is saying its a piston or a bearing in there because of how its sound in there you can tell that something broke and is rolling around in there
my dad was a subaru mechanic for 25 years so i have my own personal mechanic lol

seriously? why cometic? i just bought JDM engine today and swaping it in my legacy 98 wagon 2.5.... can i just leave it alone? if i change it to cometic do i have to get the head resurface then?

You would only need to have them resurfaced if the surface is damaged or not flat. And by damaged, I mean if there is a visible scratch anywhere near the sealing surface, its damaged. Anything using MLS gaskets is pretty picky about the surface finish because, while the seal fantasically against smooth, flat surfaces, they aren't so good against scratched surfaces or anything that isn't totally flat. If it is flat and not scratched or anything, just clean it up really well and put it back together.

BTW, I would say OE gaskets would work just as well. Not sure what the Cometic gasket costs, but the OE is pretty reasonably priced on some of the online OE Subaru parts vendors. I used all OE parts when I resealed my engine, and it didn't cost any more than it would have to use aftermarket parts, and everything fit and worked perfectly, which is very, very rare with aftermarket parts.
