hey guys. tire question

hey guys, the wife noticed a tire tumor today, so we went and got new tires, we could only afford two at the moment,

i bought the same size as on the car 205/55R16 so the car has that size on all corners but i hear all kinds of chatter about how due to the AWD all tire sizes must be the same or you risk drive train damage. i had them put the new tires on the rear.

so my question is this; will the difference in rolling diameter in having the front tires at 7/32 and the rears being brand new so 12/32 or so cause any drive train damage in the couple weeks till i can buy 2 more tires?

i cant imagine that it would, as its a very small difference, almost similar to the tires being a little low on air pressure, but i am a paranoid fool, and looking for reasurance.

what do you all think?

Brand new tires with 12/32" tread? Did you do buy snow tires? Most tires don't have that much tread on them.

ok, so i diddnt really measure, i thought thats what new tires had on them....now that ive checked, they have 11/32

not to much of a need for snow tires in fl

ive also put in the FWD fuse for the time being just in case, untill next week when i can get the other two tires.

most all season/summer tires have 10-11/32nds. As far as running them like that for a week...I don't really think its going to be that big of an issue as long as you don't drive a lot. I ran mismatched snow tires for like one winter...that was almost 3 years ago. I didn't drive more than 10-15miles during that time though.

You could always get the new tires shaved down to match the depth you have now (that is if they are even the same brand and model of tire). Tire rack and a few other big chains do this.

yours 11/32 tires have a diameter of 527.88mm your 6/32 tires have 523.72mm so theres 4.16mm differance diameter

6/32 1644mm curcumfrance
11/32 1657mm circumfrance
so 13mm differance which is .51 (1/2) inch, subaru allows 1/4 inch so its little to much
but thats on the perfect tire, differant brands measure different, so to be safe pick up a matching pair

Hi I know am probabaly too late with the answer and seeing that you wrote in February about this, am way out of topic, but I have it from good authority from Subaru Rally afficiondos over here that its the tyre profile difference that messes up the diffs, that is if you had 245/50 R 17's and you decided to fit two new 245/70 R 17's. Its that and not the tread difference that matters the most...cause of the overrall diameter difference that causes the differential to kinda wind up and get damaged...
