What audio set-up is in my BE GT limited?

Ok...i did my version of a quick search on this and nothing turned up...

I've got myself an '02 GT LTD w/ the 6 disk changer in there. When i first picked this guy up a month ago, i thought the system in there sounded fair. Since i have the all weather package and all the fancy upgrades in it along with the 6 disk, i assumed i had the Premium Sound. From what i've read, the stock set-up should be upgraded and amplified speakers.

I honestly don't think they sound that great...that's why i installed my amp and two 12's from my old car. Atleast she bumps now and the highs still sound tight with the tweeters. The mid range is still pretty weak.

I'm just curious if i have the Premium or not. If i don't, that might justify me ripping those speakers out. Could anybody tell me where that stock amp would be and if i have the Premium set-up?

Additionally, is it tough to get the door opened up for speaker installs?

Stock systems in general are not that great, especially when it comes to subarus.

New headunit and speakers are in order! The doors arnt too hard to get open, although Im not sure on the exact procedure for the BE models

I replaced my headunit and speaker without any problems. Very simple to do. If you are going to do this and need some help, just let me know. I can post a writeup, supply pics, walk you through it whatever.

Premium simply means you got a slightly better cone, and some tweeters.
That's it.

Check under the front passenger seat. You could have a sub under there.

Ha...i figured it was simply tweeters and cones. They really don't sound that great.

So...he is my predicament...I wired in my amp for LPF off the back of the head unit, because i like the nice clean stock look of the assembly and don't think a 2DIN deck would be nice with the "wood" paneling. Additionally, i'm not sure how i'd interface that 6 disk to the new unit.

So, i'm going for style over function on the headunit, but i will certainly explore better performance speakers.


Hey...BTW. I wired into the illumination line out of the headunit to get a signal to the Amp to power up. Was i wrong to do so, because the amp seems to always be on now and my battery died this morning.

NOTE: i have had this particular set-up for a couple weeks now and haven't killed the battery, but it sure was cold as hell last night.

Why is the amp staying on, and should i wire in a switch if that is the case.

BTW, if you get a single DIN HU, you can just buy or steal an accessory 1 DIN pocket off ebay (Subaru WRX/Legacy/Forester all the same) or get one from a wrecked car.

No need for 2 DIN units.

there is no way (acording to local stereo install shop) to get the OEM CD changer to work with any aftermarket deck. As I found out :?

On a side note: Yes, every OEM Subaru sound system I have heard sounded like SH!T... Hence why I have an Alpine deck, JL's all around, an Infinity sub, and OEM tweeters <- only good OEM part :wink:

yeah, you really shouldn't have wired the turn on line to the illum.

You don't have an amp turn on out of the HU? wire it to the cigarette lighter, and put a toggle switch in there, that's what I did :)

the HU didn't have an amp out. I presume they thought that the Premium sound was good enough. In my frustration (it was about 30 degrees and my hands were numb) i wired to the electric antenae signal, but soon realized that it only sends that signal when the radio is on. YES!!! i know i am dumb.

So, i opted for the illum. line. QUESTION: why is this illum constantly sending a signal even when the car is off? I drained the battery with that darn thing. In an effort to prevent this, i picked up a toggle switch.

If the illum is constantly outputing, that would be the solution. But if it isn't supposed to...than what the heck is going on?

The irony in this is JDM Legacy's come with McIntosh systems which are some of the nicest setups available in any car. I agree, the NA cars have basic systems and they suck. I've recently replaced my tape deck with an Alpine 9815 and posted a full write-up in the DIY section.

Clarification: Clarion bought McIntosh and put the name plate to put on the Subaru Clarion system and called it a McIntosh....None of the components are McIntosh inside!!! I talked to a McIntosh rep online reguarding the situation. Talk about bait and switch!!! just like whem Gm bought GEO " GEO(suzuki) metro became a chevy metro" got the idea.....

A true McItosh system would blow you away! stickly for serious audiofiles!!!
Besides theres so much road noise in a Subaru it would be a waste~!
