i think i blew my ECU

so i was driving down the road about a hour ago ( it was kinda raining) so i was driving and all of a sudden everything started freaking out like my wipers started going like 10x faster and engine turned off. i pulled over and smoke started coming out of my vents. i popped my hood and in the fuss panel the fusible link was fried and broke. also my alternator's charge wires were black like they were fried too.

im just guessing that i fried my ECU

I'd start by getting the alternator tested and getting that wiring repaired. The power surge or whatever happened could have fried your ECU, but the only way of telling for sure is to get the power source stuff fixed and see if you're still ok.

well i bought a new alternator so im not going to worry about testing my old one and im going to replace the fried wires and that link and try it im just also wondering where the white smoke came from that came out of the vents

Smoke from the fried wires was drawn into your vents below the windshield on the outside, and then ejected into your cabin.

so my ecu could be fine i just need to fix the broken circuits and give it a try

did you lights get very bright?. the dios in the alternator might of failed causing it to charge in AC current, causing the meltdown

i know something was going on cause my ac would blow stronger and my high beams got dim and stoped working. but im not sure if the lights got brighter

Not sure if the '97 Legacy ECU's are located in the same place or not (I would assume so,) but in my '99 the ECU is located under the carpet and an additional metal plate in the passenger side floor. So, if that was actually burning, I would think there would be smoke pouring in from just about everywhere. Or so it would seem.

ok well im hoping that since i didnt see anything like that my ECU is fine. Im going to try and fix most of, if not all of my fryed wires in the morning and try it out. does anyone know if how i would know for sure if ECU was blow since im dealing with blowen fueses and fryed wires i dont want to assume its the ECU when its just another fues or something

ok so i fixed the wiring and now my engine will rotate but will not turn over. ive never had any issue starting my car till this power surg so im i guess i wait till i get my new ECU and try again

Check all your fuses as well.

Does the CEL come on when you turn the key on? If not, its either not getting any power, or its been toasted. Chances are that if the alternator full fielded and overcharged that badly, it killed the PCM.
