So last week sometime, my car started to make this noise on acceleration, it sounded like a metal nut in a glass jar being shaken around it was only sometimes and quite.....

and now its doing it all the time, and its gotten louder im kinda worried that it is something seriously wrong internally, i opened the hood and listened i can here it coming from the drivers side of the engine.

someone want to chime in a see what it might be?

and mabye let me down easy if its something bad...

hmmm... got a stethoscope? cheap and can be very handy, if not use a long extension for a rachet, put your thumb over the end, then put your thumb up to your ear and touch the other end to differnt points on the engine.

might narrow it down a bit, i really like the nut in a jar analogy but i dont know what it might be..

front or rear of engine?

it must not depend on if the car is moving or in gear if your listening to it with the hood open.

what happens to the noise when you rev the motor?

cheers dude.

sounds like the dreaded rod bearing...hopefully its not that. Does the knocking sound like this?

it sounds exactly like that when I first start it :smt022 but then it goes away after I drive it for a bit, then the sound comes back and is only on acceleration and more "tingy" sounding. It louder on hard acc. and a bit more "jetson car" sounding on soft acceleration. :smt017

how do i tell, besides ripping the head off, if it is a spun bearing?

and if it is, how long do i have? :smt022

Check your exhaust heat shields under the car before you do anything. If they're loose, clamp them down or remove them.

Nope, sorry I checked that when the noise started last week. Anything else?

im gonna try to take a video of it, although looking around spun bearing noise, is not the noise that it make while driving. It ONLY makes that heavy slapping sound for about 10-15 min. when you first start the car. The noise that is worrying me is happening when the car is fully warmed up. Like i said its the best description i can give is a metal rod or nut being shaking around in a glass jar, or it kinda sounds like the jetsons car. its a fluttery ting, not a hard knock. and it gets louder and faster with accleration.

i can hear it from the drivers side of the engine, toward the front near the first plug on that side,

im going to try the scope thing when i get home tonight!

ok so the scope revealed nothing... well nothing that i know why its making the noise, there is a very loud knock coming from right where the intake mani bolts onto the head, right above the first spark plug on the drivers side, as for the "tingy" noise i can hear it from the engine bay anymore, leading me to believe that it is something loose under the car,

however the noise from the engine is concerning, also i noticed that there is a heavy amount of oil or grease where the axle comes out of the tranny on the pass side, i wiped it off, well see what happens!

as for the engine noise, anyway to diagnose this?

fixed!

things changed
( i need to post pics of my old plugs, there is no diode left on 2 of them and the ceramic is cracked)...

denzo iridum NGK plugs
Magstar Spark Plug Wire 8.5mm
Fram fuel filter
PCV valve
recharge kit for my K&N
Seafoam
1 can for my intake
1 can for my crankcase
1 can for my gas tank

my subby is purring like a kitten!!!!!

its wonderful!

glad you got it sorted out!

its my impression that if you put a can in your crankcase you want to change your oil fairly quickly after, due to the seafoam thinning your oil and being generally harsh to the inards.

same with intake due to all the carbon it loosens up and ends up in the oil..

thats just what ive heard and always done.

I think you were experiencing detonation. Thats certainly sounds like the sound you are describing, and your spark plugs kind of verify that from the sounds of it. The only thing keeping me from suggesting that before was that most Subarus have knock sensors which are designed to "hear" detonation and change ignition timing to stop it.
