I'm looking to buy a used 2006 Outback XT (ej255) to replace my '96 Legacy. Are there any specific problems I should look for in particular when checking it out?

Nothing in particular, just make sure it doesn't leak anything, there is no rust or corrosion, and if possible, check the turbo for shaft play if it is a higher mileage car. As with any used car, ask for the repair records and/or a carfax history report.

Good to know...thanks. I understand that I probably should keep away from the 2005 XT models since there were some kinks still being worked out.

Kinks still being worked out in an 05? That's 4 years old.

I think he's referring to the fact that the XT was a new model in 2005.

Sure, but by now virtually all 05 XT's would have had their "niggles" worked out. Any vehicle still running by now is bound to be just fine. It's lasted 4 years.

My friend had an 05 Outback XT and it was an excellent car with absolutely no problems.

If Subaru only had built a Outback SC...

I wouldn't worry about reliability with the 05' XT. Subaru has been making turbo engines for a long time now; they tend to last a long time if cared for.
