Anyone here had replace the fuel pump in a similar or same model H6 3.0 Liter Subaru?

Is this a job an admitted casual Subaru mechanic could perform at home?

Anyone post a how to guide here in the forums?

Thanks

Should be pretty simple - there is an access panel either beneath the rear seats or under the carpet in the trunk area. Disconnect your battery, expose the panel, and trace the fuel lines into the tank. Undo the bolts for the access cover and slowly remove the fuel lines. Disconnect the fuel pump harness and install the new one, reconnect everything, install it back into the tank, put the cover back on and put on half the nuts/bolts.

Reconnect battery and test - if all is well install the remaining bolts.

Do this in a well ventilated area.

I put the Walbro in my Legacy wagon, it was easy. Just.. yeah ventilation is needed because you're looking right into the gas tank and don't smoke for God's sake while doing it.

The harder part of the whole process was that I had to assemble the pump at first. That mean attaching the collector tube, the debris net, fit the whole thing onto the drop in arm and that took a little time. But it's not big deal.

Harder than changing your own oil, easier than changing the clutch. <- that's my new difficulty expression

Having asked the question, it would have made sense to actually follow up and read your replies.

Lets just say I went the long way on this (no further comment!), but did eventually do it the right way.

Paid about $170.00 for the pump at my local Carquest, with a 85.00 core charge. Lifetime warranty.

It starts way faster now, and has more acceleration as well. Is it me, or does it also get a little better gas mileage now?

Should have noticed the symptoms earlier, but with 276,000 miles a lot of things get passed over by me the neglectful owner. Drive my precious Wagon more than 5000 per month and dont have a lot of time to pay attention to my love, but she still loves me back anyway.

Here's to the next 270,000!
