The intake system on my 97 2.5 looks different then the one in those pictures... 97 Legacy 2.5GT Sedan - Mine has another huge box of some sort in it

yeah, you have a black box looking duct that goes from the edge of your hood back to the actual air box....is that what you're talking about?

yeah, that's the plenum box...

Reguardless, it will be replaced with that intake pipe. I have this done on my 97 GT.

it makes the air flow more smoothly before it enters the Throttle body

ie: on a sharp bend (like that intake on the 97) it makes the air go straight into the TB instead of making turbulence on the corner.

in the electrical(wiring) field plenum is a fire rating. Plenum cables burn slower and emit non-toxic smoke. So I would assume our "plenum box" must have a high heat tolerance?

Yeah, this has nothing to do with wiring...Plenum is for airflow smoothing, I don't believe its anything more than a box.

Thanks for the info - I will probably get to this project within the next couple weeks. Cleaning/ dressing up the engine bay will also be something that im going to be working on.

or this is what it is in automotive terms...
"a chamber located between the throttle body and the runners of an intake manifold; distributes the intake charge evenly to the intake ports for all cylinders, enhances engine breathing"

Have any of you actually see what you are talking about? If not maybe you should, you will understand the function of it.

plenum is not the correct term to use in this instance...i've seen plenums and i've seen the air duct that goes from the hood to the air box in a newer subaru...

take that dumb box, throw it away, and get the aem intake for an rs, drill and tap out a hole for the vacum idle controll, and get an maf adapter, and youve got the best intake for your money. the aem intake is the best because it has a really sharp bend at the top right before it goes into the TB, so you dont loose any bottom end , while you gain alot of top end as well.

Or you could just buy an Injen RD1220 and not worry about any fabrication.
