Is the oil pan prone to leak?

I wiped it before but it always seems to drip on the drain bolt side.. the only thing I can see is a little rust where the dipstick goes into the pan but I can't tell 100% if that's from that or maybe something else.

I'm not loosing a bunch of oil I'm just concerned from where it's coming from

Because I like all things cold I might be pulling the motor this winter

My oil panned leaked when I first got my car. Just dropped the pan, pulled out the old silicon and put new stuff in, hasn't leaked since.

are you talking the pan gasket or the bolt?

my pan gasket leaks like a.....leaky thing.

my drain bolt used to leak, but you can find drain bolt gaskets anywhere

LegacyGT97- how much of a pain in the ass was doing the pan gasket? or did you pull the motor? or?

I don't think it's coming from the bolt area (I always use new crush washers) I can't tell if it's coming from where there is a little rust where the dipstick holder is.. as you know if you look at the oil pan it looks like a arm of some short anyways that's where the stick going into the pan.

Yeah, like stated above the gasket wears over time. Pretty straightforward to get at it. If you unbolt the motor mounts and pitchstopper, and jack the engine up on the tranny end, you can get just enough room to the back couple of bolts of the oil pan.

I really need to do this and find a new oil pan all together. Mine is so rusted, I'm afraid if you poke it with your finger, it just may spring a leak. :-?

maybe im crazy, but i just did the motor mounts on my 97 and it BARELY gave me enough clearance. the exhaust hit on the front sway bar(?) and gave me maybe 1/8th inch of clearance.

ill have to look into doing the pan gasket that way, if you say it can be done, im sure it can, but damn, thats tight.

Thanks Bdubs pretty much what I saw seemed like it was part of the oil pan still.

Hmm unbolt the motor mounts.. might as well change those as well. I was going to do Group N but I've only heard others opinions but when the motor is at idle how does it feel in the cabin? For me and my stock mounts sitting still in the car you can feel the bounciness in the drivers side mirror as well.

And Green97gt I was looking at the motor mounts today are you talking about the bolts that are closer to the tranny that are kinda what looks like up in the engine area? It too said shit that's tight..I don't know how much of a pain it's going to be.

A guy on the BBS was nice enough to do some photos of his oil pan out with the engine still in.

Subaru use the crush metal washers. I really don't like that. Is there another brand of washers you guys use? preferably, the kind that's made of plastic/paper kind????

funny I never had a issue with the washers I thought they were pretty good.. the washers that were on the car when I did the first oil change as the new owner were some copper type washer and some other metal washer on top of the copper one.

search fumoto drain valve.

If it gets caught on something then you have more to worry about than a drain valve. It's not an issue. People who say so have never used one.

I ran with one during several rallycrosses and I didn't have a skidplate at that time.

Wasn't all that bad. Put the car up on a hoist at the shop that my dad works at and him and me did it in less then an hour. If you go get a Hanes manual it explains it quite easily. All in all its not that bad.

They should be fine - if the pan is leaking the oil is probably keeping the bolts protected/lubed.

Yeah, thats a little nasty. But, you should see mine! Upstate New York car FTL!
The one reason why I haven't taken this task on is because the bolts look like they will probably disintegrate to the touch.
