I had to move my car out of the street after a few things went wrong with a wheel bearing replacement and it was taking too long. I stepped on the brake pedal out of habit while the caliper was not on the rotor and a piston popped out. So I have two questions:
1. Can that be fixed with the cheap repair kit from Subaru? I don't know what is in the overhaul kit
2. Assuming it can't be, what cars have compatible calipers?

I have done a bit of searching on caliper compatibility, and it sounds like many different 2-piston calipers will bolt right up (although I'm still not sure which ones exactly), but I am wondering if I only replace one and it is different, could it end up applying uneven braking force between my two front brakes? I don't want to replace both fronts, but I do want some options before heading to a junkyard, since finding Subarus there is hard enough. I believe my exact calipers were only used on 2000-2002 LGTs, but I am not 100% sure if that is true either.

Your (front?) caliper was used on any 2 piston Subaru from 98-2005.

You can get a reman caliper from any autoparts store and turn your caliper in for a core charge. Install your pads, grease it up, bolt on, bleed the brake and roll on.

You can push the pistons back in, as long as the rubber seals are still good and the walls of the pistons are not gouged or corroded. In fact, thats what you have to do to start rebuilding any caliper.

You can get rebuild kits for these calipers, even from autozone, they shouldnt cost more than $20/per caliper. I rebuilt my nissan 4 pot calipers, and my 05 LGT calipers...here's some pics so you can get a general idea on how to do it if its your first time...
