Hey.

My Sunroof cable snapped a long time ago, and I silicone caulked the damned thing shut.

I can either buy the guts/glass from a wrecker and hope it works, and I know that it is for my car.

The Questions is, my buddy; who is parting his '04 WRX Premium with a sunroof; is well... parting out his car... Would the guts work? could I salvage the guts? Cables, motor? re-using my glass and tracks, obviously?

Yay, nay? Suggestions?

This what the assembly looks like.

I really doubt that an impreza GC/GD motor/cable etc.. will work.

Download the FSM for both Legacy and Impreza and compare the parts.
Go one step further and get the part numbers and compare them to each other and consult the your local Stealer.

Best bet is to buy the full assembly from either a wrecker or parts car. $200 for a rusting legacy is worth it when you can salvage switches, interior panels, sunroof, etc. These sweet deals come around once and awhile.

Good luck

P.S. Disassembling the glass from the tracks is a nightmare that's why I suggest replacing the entire assembly.

BUMP!!!
Any word on this, My leg gt sunroof just started doing this. Opens but no close or tilt. I got home from work, closed the sunroof, got into it the next mornin, and after i opened it, it wouldnt close. WTF?? Any help would be appreciated, it will be snowing here soon, and i wouldnt mind but if you look at my roof, since it doesnt close on its own, the front section is sagging down a quarter to a half inch or so, and well i dont want to think of what snow and ice is going to start reaking havoc on up there and not to mention all the leaks ill have. Where i live its normal to get up in the morning with more than a foot of fresh snow on top of your car. . . FOR MONTHS AND MONTHS AND MONTHS!!! HELLLLLP

Just find a whole sunroof setup. Drop down your old one and drop in the new one. Took 2 hours for me and did not have to bother with trying to fix anything. Just look on the forums, I got my from a fellow member. Trust me it will save time and money trying to figure out the problem. Good luck

Eventually when this happens to my sunroof, I will be removing the entire sunroof cassette, and either welding the roof closed, or installing a plexiglass window. Either way I'll save 100lbs.

Hells yeah. Thats a good idea, im sure theres a few different options you could go if you did that, like cut an even larger hole out that stretches toward the back and custom fit a large plexiglass insert, custom tailored of course!1 Or shit, maybe choppin it all the way and havin a suby (un) convertable! Heh heh, i wonder if anyone has turned their suby into a convertible? There some mexican in my neighborhood who did this to his older (98 or so) dodge neon, and it dont look to shabby! almost looks like it was made that way, but it now looks like a dodge miata!!!! LOL, off topic a bit! But yeah, i really gotta do somethin with mine. I Can go to my local suby boneyard and rape one a the other subies out there with a sunroof but i was hopin i didnt have too. It would be forr free. so i guess i cant bitch. I have the hoooook up!

same exact problem everyone else gets.

i was gonna get a used one and put it in but i read an old thread on here where a guy did that and then the new (used) one broke 2 weeks later....

i used to use it every day but it hasn't been touched in over a year

You have to take chance if your not willing to spend big money on new oem parts.

Just go with the used one the chances of it actually dying is slim.

Many people have installed oversized sunroofs on there car. Works well but not recommend if lateral G's are your friend

Its not suggested to convert a uni-body car into a convertible. There a massive amount of reinforcement needed to do this.

I'd go with huffer and install a "blank" made out of fiberglass/carbonfiber/plexiglass/lexan

a fella over on NASIOC/LGT.com posted a great DIY to fix your sunroof on the BD/BG chassis:
