I picked up a 98 outback wagon w/ a blown motor and dropped a 2.2 that i had in the basement in it. put new plugs/wires in it, & i'm def. getting a spark, but when i try to start the car it just keeps turning over, but wont start up. i can smell fuel in the engine bay after trying for a few seconds.

Anyone have any idea whats causing this? the car's at my work and my boss is sick of it being there. any help would be greatly appreciated.

ya, 2.5 didnt have a fuel purge tank, so i picked one up for the lines on the 2.2 at a junkyard and connected the 2 hoses, still nothing

If you're smelling fuel, that means you have a fuel leak somewhere, so check everything fuel related. Check the injectors, and make sure their O-rings are good, as well as the FPR, and the filter, lines, and pump. Another possibility: the coil pack.

you should borrow a code reader and check for codes before taking guesses.

I'm going to say you missed a connector somewhere.

Thanks, i'll go over it all today after work, a mechanic that works were we take customer cars to for repairs said he'll look at it on thursday. hopefully I'll have it running by this weekend.

Finally got it straight, the timing was off. worked on it after work today and it started right up. No CEL, no leaks, no overheating, trans is good, but...

So far, i have an exhaust leak in the midpipe, and even worse, the motors tapping & smoking on the passenger side around exhaust manifold/behind motor maybe (smells like burnt plastic almost?) :smt011 . The motors been sitting a couple yrs, anyone have any clue what might cause this? Someone tell me it'll all go away in 50 miles.
