when you start buying parts for a car you haven't picked up yet?
anyways, i'm currently waiting to pick up a 96 legacy wagon from a member on here who's waiting on the title so i figured, why not buy something for the new ride...
here's what i bought.

they are the jdm halogen headlights. they have one broken tab but the tab is included so i should have no problems fixing them.
and the best part... i paid 6.48 for them + 18 shipping. 8)

no, its awesome! :D
I dunno if those will put out light any better, but they look nice with the clear corners :)
Great deal!

how'd you score those at that price?!

surprisingly, they were on eBay and no one was bidding on them

mark... the headlights that the car are coming with are pretty yellowed. i'm not really worried about more light output as much as a set of nice looking headlights with at least equal output.
gil_ong... luck of the draw... i ALMOST had a set of blizzak's mounted on 14" subaru steelies but they got bid up really bad in the last 3 minutes of the auction. (we're talking sub $175 until the last 3 mins.)
jess... :P  8)

Forgive my ignorance, but A) aren't all the lamps capable of holding halogens, and B) aren't those amber corner lamps? You can see the bulb through them.
Either way, a nice deal on a set of lights. Personally, I want to find a pair of the clear plastic with refractive mirrors, instead of the injected refractions like those and many other lamps have. I think they came on the 99's, but I imagine the clear clear plastic results in much better light output.

A question of curiosity...
I've seen guys selling supposed "JDM" lights on eBay that look the same as USDM versions, like the ones in the first post. Is there actually a difference between those style headlamps that come from Asia or Europe and the ones that are sold here in North America? Or are the true JDM versions the projector style (which are usually $200 - $250)?

i could be wrong but i think the "amber" that you see in the pic is from the bulb, not from an amber reflector...
plays_with_toys... as far as i know, every modern car has at least halogen lights in it. i just posted that as these aren't the projectors... and i believe the refractions on the lense are there to help disperse the light for better output...
mark... eh... i can do it this way too

Regular JDM headlights are essentially the same as our USDM headlights-except they don't have the amber reflector, and they're aimed a little different.
JDM projectors were only on some Legacys (upscaled ones I'd guess) in Japan.
PWT-they're clear corners, you're just seeing the bulb reflecting light.

So the reflector is clear. Gotcha.

The projectors were typically only installed on the genuine GT and GTB's from Japan. Several of my friends have them.
The non-projectors are found as standard equipment on many RSKs and earlier GTs.
They have a clear indicator lens with an orange bulb.
Damn good buy, nothing like a pair of near new lenses to help...
Scratched up and pitted glass/plastic is the biggest impact on light quality and clarity.

i got them in today and there are three bulbs in the headlight housing... one is the headlight obviously (9003/H4), one is the corner lamp (1156) and then there is a 194 mounted between the two. are the US models like this and if not, anybody have any insight as to what the 194 would be for?

The amber or orange is NOT the bulb. It's a plastic cap inside the housing. I have yet removed mine but did so on my tails. I have yet figured out what to do with the 194 bulb, I was told it was used as a directional. Good deal strat81, I paid $200 and change for my set. Yellow or not you scored

You'll probably find that the turn signal is an 1156 bulb and not an 1157. That's because the JDM cars use the corner for turning signal only, not indicator/parking. As such, the 194 is supposed to be the indicator/parking light. On my JDM headlights, I replaced the corner 1156 with an 1157. The socket is a little different, but nothing a dremel can't fix. You can buy the sockets at many automotive stores, or if you don't plan on re-using your old headlights for anything, take the bulb and socket from there.

reason... ya i noticed it was a cap when i got the headlights in... i just watched another set go for close to $100. these are nice and clear... just have one broken tab which a little epoxy will fix.
legacy4life... i know it's a 1156 for the corner... it just seems though that the 194 isn't amber colored (which i would think it would be if it was for the parking lights...)
i dunno... maybe i'll try wiring it up to a switch or something and put some blue leds to light up the housings when i'm parked...

spence- I've seen 194s that are amber, look at advance auto

i know 194's come in amber... i was saying that the headlights came with all the bulbs and even the plugs... the 194 that's in the housing (that came with the housing) is not amber... it's white. normally parking lights are amber. hence why i asked to make sure that the 194's really are used as parking lights.

The "inbetween" 194 bulb are for the City Lights.
They are non-bright driving lights. In the cities overseas, it's bright and crowded in the citys, so at night time, you simply turn off your headlights and have the "city lights". You only need lights so other people can see you, but you don't want to blind anyone.
They aren't used in America.

first off strat, nice hook up.
& no, its not bad for you to pick up pieces before you get your ride. I've done it before and will do it again.
I absolutely love the 'city lights'. I like how they add that subtle touch to the headlamps. I wish America would allow that in cities at night.

I'm assuming the 194 bulb is the little one. If so then they are called side lights and it's as described above, for use in dusk and low level light, where your usual headlights aren't necessary. They also double as parking lights on the legacy where when the parking light button is pressed on top of the steering cowling, it switches those and the tails on to prevent people crashing into you when you're parked up.
Generally, people only use the side lights when it's starting to get dark, even in the cities. As a basic rule of the thumb in the UK, when the street lights come on, it's time to turn the headlights on properly. I've been driving round with my sidelights on for most of the past few months as it's not been too bright over here.
Those lights look the same as the earlier EDM ones, which will be very similar to Jap spec as both us and the Jap's drive on the opposite side of the road, so when the headlights have been put into your car, you'll probably find people flashing you becasue you are dazzling them! Ours aim one way, yours aim the other!
