I've been wanting to swap a 5mt into my LGT...basically since I bought it, but because of my future plans I've been wanting to do it either for very cheap or just wait to swap the entire drivetrain.

Well, I think I may have found a very cheap way of doing it. I've found a 96 Impreza 2.2l 5mt with no engine, but the rest of the drivetrain and interior are all there. I can get it cheap enough that I could take the trans, axles and rear diff from the car, part out the rest and probably cover the cost of the car.

Now, I'm pretty sure the diff gear ratios are different, but the car comes with the rear diff so thats fine. My main concern is if the pedal assembly and/or shifter is different and whether it would work. Also, what other parts wouldn't work or would I need? No engine, so I'll need to get a flywheel and clutch, I'm guessing I'll also need the driveshaft since the Impreza one is probably shorter??

Any useful input would be helpful.

You sure your willing to spend the time and money to convert to 5MT?

I hope your paying $500 or less for this car........... this is hours and hours of work..

Things you need: (Do more research and make sure that my list isn't missing anything)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-master/slave cylinders and all supporting lines (master sits next to the brake booster on the firewall) (slave sits on the tranny)
-5MT Starter
-5MT ECU from the same year or your evap system will throw codes
-Pedal assembly
-Shift Linkage
-Shifter
-manual brake booster
-Interior Shifter trim plate
-5MT tranny crossmember assembly
-5MT tranny mount
-clutch cable, fluid
-which wire to move from neutral to clutch peddle
-Throw Out bearing and spring clips if missing
-

Problems you will run into:
-----------------------------------------------------------
-TCU delete via ground certain pins on the harness
-ABS issues with it being tied into the TCU
-Cruise control or lack there of.

The transmission tunnel should be identical for both 5MT/4EAT.

I am not 100% sure about your driveshaft since the legacy is a tad longer. One of the mods or guru members probably has the answer.

IMHO which no one really gives two shits about.. This conversion is not worth it unless you have a proper shop and proper funds. Sell your car and buy a 5MT you will be happier in the end.

To each their own/

Thank you for the input.

First off let me say that I have absolutely 0 intention of selling this car to replace it with a 5mt model. I probably should have been more clear about this in the beginning. But regardless, I didn't ask if anyone thought I should swap the transmission or whether it was worth it, so...yeah. And the amount of work involved isn't a problem for me. Lets just say this isn't the first time I've swapped a transmission.

My question is what parts would work from the Impreza and what won't?

Thanks

No problem, I should have been more clear in my original post.

I'm in a little different situation then most of the people who ask this type of question, because I know it comes up a lot and most of the time for the people who are asking, it is better to sell the car and get an MT equipped one. But, I was very specific in buying this specific car because it was exactly what I wanted, and I bought it with the intention of swapping the trans eventually, because I plan on swapping the entire drivetrain from the crank pulley to the rear diff cover with something more performance oriented. But, the 4EAT in this thing is showing every bit of the 154k miles on it and I'm concerned its near failing, so I'm trying to be a bit pro-active and replace it before it leaves me stranded. But, I cannot justify putting another auto in there since I don't like them and they tend to fail way before manuals do. Plus I have the tools, the knowledge, and the spare car necessary to swap it over easily, so as far as actually getting the job done, I'm good to go there.

Anyway, I'm looking at buying this parts car this weekend, so any other thoughts/comments/insights on Impreza parts (specifically the pedal assembly) in a Legacy would be fantastic. Anything I can get from other 5MT models is easy (starter, clutch master and slave, flywheel, etc) its the stuff specific to the LGT (like the PCM) that I'm going to have a harder time with, since they are few and far between on the roads around here, let alone in junk yards.

And yes, I am paying quite a bit less than $500 for this car, if I buy it.
