***************************************************
Well this will be my thread of the long and interesting journey i have had and will have with my awe-inspiring Subaru Legacy......

Specs:
Year: 1996
Model: Brighton
Engine: Ej22E(2.2l SOHC)

So far it has been an interesting ride with my legacy. Now 4 years owning it, its gone from a simple daily driver, to an amazing project car that i have so much love for.

I loved subaru's from the start, and I always figured i would just buy a different subaru later(because i was a little turned off by the plainess of the "brighton"). but as time continued and i learned more and more about AWD and boxer engines, as well as the lines and curves that my legacy had.. what can i say, i started to LOVE it(even though its a brighton ).

As i started to take to it and had the desire to make it unique(like anyones story on here), i went to work.

heres some pics before i started - roughly 7/22/08

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2009/09/subarupics001-1.jpg

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2009/09/subarupics005-1.jpg

So over the last year i did just a few little things(as i did not have very deep pockets)

Here's that short list:
- k&n air filter
- custom black grill
- black powder-coated outback rims
- painted calipers/ drumbs
- touch up paint on front and rear wiper blades(very rusty)
- HKS Hi-Flow Stainless Steel Muffler

very short list

Pics after these mods

and when my baby broke down - roughly 3/16/09

https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2009/09/003-1.jpg

to make a long story short, my engine needed to be rebuilt. Money? nope. For 6 months i had to use a loner Mits Eclipse from my uncle to save up.

so now i have saved up the amount ive needed to get the car where i want it to be(somewhat). i wish i could boost it, but funds didnt permit this.

At this current time 9/23/09, my engine is out and in the process of being rebuilt.

mods after this whole project:

Engine
- custom fab'd ram air intake
- ported heads
- ported intake manifold
- custom fabricated headers
- 2.5" cat back exhaust with high flow cats
- HKS Hi-Flow Muffler
- Group-A Throttle Body Spacer
- Group-A Phenolic Spacers
- Group-A Lightweight crank pulley
- heavy duty clutch
- lightweight flywheel

Exterior/Cosmetics
- 18" Black Enkei Rims
- Bridgestone Low profile Run-Flat Tires
- 97 legacy GT front bumper
- 20% Tint
- New paint job(color will stay the same)

Interior
- 07 wrx shift knob

ok sooo... talked to the guy at delta cam, and the 1000 and 2000 grinds are for the 2.5l engines. theres 220 grind and 230 grind for the 2.2l's. he told me 220 is more for torque, and the 230 is more for hp.

im feelin the 230

Huffer
09-23-2009, 04:50 PM
Go 220... these engines will never be high hp machines but low-down tq is great if thats where you spend most of your time, below 4000rpm.

Ask Delta where the 230 grind kicks in the most on the RPM, and where the 220 grind drops off. :)

I actually am getting performance single-port headers(our stock headers are SUPER restrictive and un-flowful*)lol, but there going to be custom fabricated by my exhaust guy. i will be doing 2.25" headers into a high flow cat(not sure which make yet, will find out tomorrow actually), then into 2.5" piping all the way back to my HKS muffler...

im actually planning on changing that to a STI muffler, so if ANYONE is interested*** in a HKS HI-FLOW Stainless steel Muffler, let me know***.

i actually just came into some extra money today, so the project is looking that much better

ended up getting the cams back within 2 days. they finished grinding them within 5 hours, and had them back out to me shipped that same day.

DELTA CAM is the WAY TO GO!! they are amazing! if you need cam work done, call delta cam and ask for jonney blaze and tell him sam sent you. he's the owner of the company and he is a great guy that will hook you up!

got some pics of the block coming.

i KNOW!!!! it needs to be done!

the cams were through Delta Cam in Washington State. I know the owner and could get you a hook up. just PM me and ill fill you in, i would GREATLY recommend them, they do amazing quick work.

Delta Cam gave me a grind on my cams within 5 hours of getting it. i sent them, they ground them, they sent'em back, all within 3 days. im in florida they're in washington..do the math. thats pretty good. the owner john sure knows how to keep his head above water with his business in this economic downfall. thats for sure

but ya just pm me...

WELL, we tried to start it up yesterday after everything was set and put together, oil pressure good, fuel is good, etc etc. and it isnt starting!!!

the injectors arent firing, we think it might be the computer and it isnt sending any codes.

DOES ANYONE KNOW WHATS GOING ON??? ANYONE with this problem before?? i need some help.

thank you guys

Are your fuel and vaccum lines all where they are supposed to go? I remember double checking and double checking mine just to get them right. The injectors might not be getting any fuel. Check the connectors for the injectors themselves too. Make sure they're tight.

jey
10-12-2009, 11:56 AM
Are you getting spark? Check crank and cam sensors first, those are essential.

i dont think we are getting spark no. ok ill check those sensors. but this wouldnt have anyhting to do with me switching clusters would it? i switched clusters with a 97 L, same engine though, but it was automatic and my car is manual. i didnt just take the tach our of it, i took and installed the entire cluster. would it have anything to do with this or no?

Huffer
10-12-2009, 12:42 PM
Cluster won't have any effect on the engine, but make sure your dash lights are coming on when you turn the key.

parkcityboyx
10-12-2009, 01:42 PM
fuel pressure is good, spark, everything is good, the injectors are just NOT getting power!

parkcityboyx
10-12-2009, 05:49 PM
should i just replace my ECU? is it codes that just arent getting to the injectors? thats what my mechanic thinks. any thoughts?

parkcityboyx

alright well we narrowed it down to the "ignitor" that connects the ECM to the coil. if it isnt this ignitor(which is $185), then it will be the ECM. So we are really hoping this is it!

So what was the problem?

haha, that question should have been what were the PROBLEM'S? hahahaha, but you didnt know.

you have no idea the hell ive gone through the last week.

If you want to hear some irony and comedy, or if you love subaru engines, go ahead and read.

So get this, the original family friends i had working on rebuilding the engine finished rebuilding the motor(with my help, atleast 2 hours a day). it was kind of a learning experience for me. So i saw the whole thing put together.

the last id say two days before the engine was dropped, i couldnt make it into the shop as much because of an exam i was studying for. during this time he would have been putting all the top of the motor on. Timing belt, Intake manifold, alternator, powersteering pump, etc. you get the idea. he also had a very short attitude with me, and was real short with me before those 2 days, i think he just really wanted the project done bc it had been there so long. Well when the engine was dropped, he called me, told me we had fuel pressure and everything was on and good. BUT that we didnt have any power to the injectors and spark in only 2 cylinders. he traced it back to the ignition module, i bought it, it was $200, it didnt change anything. then we thought maybe its the ECM, its a long shot and unlikely but we tried it. New ECM didnt make a difference. :smt013

then we checked out ALL the voltage on the injectors, all fine. checked all the voltage on everything else(sensors), all fine. there was just something that was telling the computer not to fire two cylinders and not to spray fuel!

so i asked him "are you SURE all the timing was done correctly?" and "were the cams shimmed correctly?" .... he said ABSOLUTELY. i know i did it right, for sure. it seemed a little suspiciously prideful to me.

we tried figuring all this out over sometime, about 2 weeks. :smt009 so me and my dad just decided to tow it home so we could work on it ourselves.

my family friend was all of a sudden nicer after my car left his shop(he must have been very tired of it being there).

we decided to check the timing ourselves, guess what? it was off, he didnt read the manuals instructions to use the inner crank marker, not the outer. SO we fixed it, and 4 hours later of work. IT RAN!!! words cant describe how ready and excited i was to drive it. :smt011 too soon too soon was i excited..

because about 4 miles later, my engine was rapidly becoming extremely hot, i pulled over, and got it towed back to my house, because i did not want to fry my newly rebuilt engine. a coolant leak i could tell right away, and it was coming from underneath my intake manifold. i later find out, that my "family friend" forgot to put on the water by-pass pipe on before he put the intake manifold on. this coolant water pipe NEEDS to be put on BEFORE the intake manifold. well he was to lazy to take the intake manifold off, so he cut the metal water by-pass pipe and connected it with and old beat up rubber hose. this pipe is sitting on the block. nough'said. the rubber hose exploded because of the heat, leaving me to rot in disappointment after getting my car running. AND i had to repair and fix it myself, because obviously i would not be taking my car back to that dumbass.

so another 4 hours would be going to taking down the manifold, and alternator, and timing belt etc. ..... and as i started breaking down and unscrewing the intake manifold, i noticed a crack in my intake manifold with silicon all around it. :smt007 oh dont you just love surprises. not only did this guy screw up my timing(when all he had to do was look in the manual), but he cut a pipe that costs $75 and could've made my motor fry, he ALSO cracked my intake manifold!! pure dumbass. i can see why he likes to stick with classic cars, he sucks at this stuff.

so now i had to either spend $300 for a new manifold, or get mine aluminum welded. which still costs $125(professionally done  ).

took everything down, took manifold to welders, ordered new by-bass pipe, ordered new gaskets for manifold today. should have it running again strong myself tomorrow or saturday.

in total, what i had to pay for AFTER i paid my family friend 1600 for the whole thing to be dont right...was....

After $1600 for full project originally, i had to do this...
-12 hours of work
-paid $556 in parts

... all of this work and money are things that should have been taken care of already by my "family friend". lets just say he's cost me a little too much money and headaches for him to be my friend anymore.

after all this, i seriously think i know more about ej22's then i want to.

thanks for reading

Also rethinking about who's gonna help me out when I redo my suspension.

good suggestion for headers would be the borlas (or ebay borlas) if you want to keep the boxer rumble, or any Equal length Headers (like OBX) if your looking for a little more power and smoother sound.

well, im pretty sure the damage to the axle, strut, and tranny, costs more then what the car is worth. so i believe the lady's insurance will claim it as totaled. which will mean ill only get a check for barely what the car is worth. and i put WAY more money into it then what its worth.

i think the book value is like $2000-3500. ill MAYBE get $1700. i put $2600 cash into it through mods and upgrades.

DEPRESSING!!

got the car back to driving condition through insurance work and what not...

but, lets just say the guy who built my motor has decided to put me through hell again. i dont even consider him a friend anymore. 2 days after i get my car back from the subaru dealer with all new struts in the front, and after i paint my calipers red and do a new brake job. my car decides to start making i really really loud clanking noise. now what it is has still yet to be determined exactly. we know it has to do with the valves. its a valve knock of somesort. maybe something with the shims, were not sure. but we are doing our best to figure it out.

a bad ass looking legacy. :smt012 too bad i cant drive it, and its cost me an arm and a leg.

Damn, just read through the whole thread. I really like your car and all the work you have done to it. You keep getting the short end of the stick, I hope you stick it out and finish this because it looks badass right now and can't go anywhere but up. Good luck man!

At this point it might just be easier to buy a used engine and drop that in, tear down the old one, take pics of the problems, and try to get some money back out of that guy. Or rebuild it as a project/backup engine.

ya thats true, right now im just trying to figure out my budget and what i will be doing. i recently relocated to california for a temporary amount of time. i will get back to the car in florida mid march and make the final decision then.

its been a long tiring fight with this engine, i almost just dont want to give up on it.

Alright, soooooooooo.....

the loud clanking noise was coming from my valves on the driver side. pulled the valve cover off, pulled the rocker arms, checked the lash adjusters, and the top 4 lash adjusters were completely useless. they lost all compression. hopefully this isnt gibrish to all of you. but anyway, i replaced the lash adjusters, and what do you know the knocking noise is gone!!!!

this entire project is recorded at this site in full .......... http://www.lovehorsepower.com/SubaruDoc ... eplace.htm (http://www.lovehorsepower.com/SubaruDocs/LashAdjusterReplace.htm)

in the accident something with my steering on the left side went bad as well, so gonna have to figure that out as well. but its coming together. im getting everything squared away to perfection. :smt005

^^no prob. good luck with it, its not too hard of a deal.

now theres a bit of a noise on the drivers side when i break, turn the wheel, and when i hit bumps. kind of a knocking clanging noise. the ball joint is ok as we can tell when we jacked it up. but there was some give in the tie rod, and we think its going to take replacing the steering rack and pinion. this probably happened during the accident and we arent seeing affects until now.

we are going to go ahead and order the rack and pinion, unless anyone has any other ideas... maybe like adjusting the steering. idont if you can though.

I dont know for sure yet guys, BUT, there is a beautiful 2005 2.5 GT in my area for sale. Somewhat in my pricerange if i can sell my car.

I got to say im confused right now, because this GT blows my mind, but then i absolutely LOVE my subaru, and after this last fix with my CV Joint needing some grease, my car is in pristine condition. i love it!!!!!

anybody interested? there is still a lot of upgrades and mods left to be done. still a great project, and its a beautiful car. Interior looks brand new, literally. everything has been done to get it back in perfect condition. any advice?

I dont know exactly what to do, but i checked KBB today on my car, and its looking like a fair asking price would be right around $3700? thats with the upgrades, wheels, and run-flat tires

Navi271
03-20-2010, 09:49 PM
If you can sell yours and be guaranteed to get the GT then yeah I'd do it. Nothing would suck more than to sell your car and find out the other car was already gone.
Those LGTs are freakin sweet, got some friends that have some and they are NICE to ride in.

At the same time tho.... I probably couldn't sell my car because it is WAY too personalized to ME. Even if the 05 has a turbo, your car has Delta Cams and all that engine work which not many legacy's have. Its up to you in the end but I don't think I could do it, the car you have has a lot more life in it...

parkcityboyx
03-20-2010, 11:52 PM
ya i mean, i know i shouldnt give up the opportunity to get this 05 GT, but its tuff if im not going to be able to sell my car for a good price. or just sell it period. cause i definitely love it and wouldnt mind keeping it and continue to mod it out, but then i really want this GT, i could probably get it for around 9500, it has 95,000 miles on it.

DOES THAT SOUND LIKE A GOOD DEAL??? OR SHOULD I STICK WITH WHAT I GOT??

httrdd
03-21-2010, 06:36 AM
I would say that is a pretty good deal. The 05+ LGTs are going to be gas hogs compared to your 2.2. Unless you go turbo you will not reach the 265hp that the 05s have without a shit ton of money. A little modding and you have a 300 hp car that was normally 0-60 in 5 seconds.

The sti titanium piston one has the lip on the bottom for the 5spd boot, whereas the factory 04 sti knob does not. Also, not sure that the tread pitch is the same between 5 and 6spd.

whenever i accelerate or slow down, my wagon hatch or my rear area vibrates violently. does anyone have this problem too? what could it be?

1) Stock Emergency Jack is not secured. Rattling around.. (secure it!!!)
2) Exhaust is hitting rear sub frame this is usually the hangers fault.. dried out and not doing its job. (wiggle the muffler around and listen for the rattle/banging.
3) Your hatch handle is not in the neutral position. This happens when they start to rust and stick in the open position. When you lock your car the latch locks but the handle is in the open position so the hatch bangs back and forth (within a few mm's) even though the latch is locked. Common on most 95-99 wagons. (Lubricate the handle and make sure it goes to the neutral position)
4) Like "99gtlimited" said your rear end bushings are toast. Replace to stock if you want normal feel. Replace with aftermarket or solid bushings for a more rigid violent feel :-D

my car has been doing great! its ridiculous the kind of gains ive made with the engine mods. SO much different from before the rebuild. its been about 1500 miles since the build and im starting to be able to step on it a little bit and not be afraid. and the other day i was playing around in a street/dirt upcoming development, and when i hit 2500rpm's it feels like a turbo spooling up and it guns. the torque just makes the drive and acceleration amazing! i beat my friends 96 mustang gt, in the street section of this development.

if this is how good it is now, i cant wait to get my engine management done, with the PP6 from rallitek. i think this that mod will really make my cams go even crazier. my car will be unstop-able in the dirt, torque is your best friend in a rally race!!! i think im going to try and start a rally club down here in florida.

im just amazed by my car and what its putting out :smt007

alright guys im a little confused...

whenever i start my engine in the morning, or when it is cold, or has been sitting for a little while, a huge cloud of smoke comes out of the exhaust. now this only continues for about 2 or 3 seconds after the big cloud of smoke. then it goes right back to just clear fine exhaust. its running fine other then some engine noise(which im going to upload a recording of the noise later today). but im pretty sure its just regular old boxer engine noise. nothing crazy. anyway, i just really want to know if anyone else has had this problem and what it could be. my father, and one of my friends think its just condensation in the piping being burned and pushed out the back. idk. i do live in florida..

any input??

chuckthefuk
04-19-2010, 06:52 PM
Is the smoke coming from the muffler or under the car. If its coming from the underside then you may have a leak thats saturating the exhaust pipes and burning off when you start the car. Exampe rear main seal is leaking onto the cats and burning off on first startup.

What color is the smoke?

Blue = Burning Oil
White = Burning Coolant.

Last time I checked "water" or "condensation" escaping the combustion chamber will never look like smoke. Maybe steem or a light haze.

I'v never experienced this personally but my friend just went through this with his supra. His valve seals were leaking which causes a small pool of oil to sit on his piston. When he fired it up in the morning it would shoot out blue smoke for 2-5 mins and then go back to normal.

Its possible your head gasket can be leaking "slightly" but I coudn't tell you.

Also you said you rebuilt the motor.. how many clicks have you driven since the build? All the oil/grease/finger prints from assembly tend to burn off within the first 1000km.

Cheers

parkcityboyx
04-19-2010, 11:34 PM
hey thanks for the respond Chuck!

the smoke is coming from the muffler. it is not any color, just a thick fog, and could only describe it has smoke. it def smells like burning something, i dont know about heavy burning oil though. and i have about 1500 miles on it give or take.

i look under and i cant see any leaks. at either had.

maybe a valve thing

response greatly appreciated!

chuckthefuk
04-20-2010, 12:28 AM
Then its probably just moisture sitting in your exhaust system and "fogging" out in the morning on start up. You can tell if it smells like oil.. its strong...

If your wondering if its coolant coming out put your hand behind the muffler for a minute then check if your hand is wet. Does it smell sweet? If so then its coolant. If not then its just basic emissions

Are the rear struts for a wagon or sedan? If for the sedan you will have a problem being that you have more weight in the rear.

parkcityboyx
05-11-2010, 05:21 PM
They are for a sedan. But they sit perfectly fine and how i want the rear to sit.

My question is about the front^^^

it is higher then i want it to be. My question was.. Would it be a problem if I lowered the front about an inch with some lowering springs?!**

httrdd
05-11-2010, 05:26 PM
Since the are sedan springs the rear will sit low and pull the front up higher. Not really sure if lowering springs will make a difference with performance, but should work.

I mean isn't it normal sometimes to lower just the front or just the back?

its not toooooo bad, but i really know i am going to want to do something about it.

**** has anyone had this problem, if so howd you fix it?

**** im thinking im just going to lower the front with lowering springs, is that ok?

the fronts have a higher arc over the wheel so although it may be 100% level, the arc'll make the front appear higher

i know that. i just need to know, if its going to be ok if i lower my front with lowering springs????

Lone_legacy
05-12-2010, 12:48 PM
It will be ok in the sense that your stance will level out and it wont be unsafe. If you stiffen up the front and not the rear, however, that may cause some handling issues. (ie. plowing understeer) wrx springs are pretty soft in the rear. Nothing a big RSB wont fix.

I don't know how you are going to find front lowering springs though. I'd just buy a set of lowering springs and drop F&R. Are you doing the install yourself?

parkcityboyx
05-12-2010, 02:13 PM
RSB?

if i lower the front and rear, wont the stance still be the same?? cause right now the rear is WAY lower then the front. i want to even out, ya know?

ill probably have it done at my shop since im crunching on time before i move..

ya i dont have 229. and i dont know. im actually starting to like the way the stance looks. lol. it looks REALLY agressive, and like its going to kill the car next to it.

im half considering just leaving it like it is. its completely level, alignment is perfect. it doesnt cause any harm at all.

Not sure if it gives you a hp increase, but it does help spool faster which mean faster acceleration! If you think you could cut a wrx hood scoop into that hood it would give the car a whole different look! I can get you a picture of a red Leggy wagon with a wrx scoop on it! :smt025

This car has givin you quite the run around.. good to see you can finally start getting the wants on the car instead of the needs.
I'm surprised that the wrx suspension didn't lower your car more, don't get me wrong it looks good.
I'll be on the look out for that sound clip, and maybe a video of this beast in action..

TGX4776-Not to hard.. put car in 5th, set ebrake, 22mm socket, and breaker bar. long pipe if needed for extra leverage.

im really wanting to invest into a computer piggy back for my leggy. ive heard and know a little about the PP6. how hard is it to install these things? i know engine management will strongly add to the cam work i have done to my newly rebuilt engine

All you have to do to install the PP6, or any piggyback EMS, is read a wiring diagram, and solder. It took me 1.5 hours, taking my time.

what did you get from the PP6 again? what kind of gains? and what is the best one for our cars?

anothernord
07-12-2010, 07:08 PM
The PP6 is a piggyback ECU that allows you to adjust fuel and pull ignition timing. I used it for my supercharger setup, and it worked fine. I just added some fuel up top. As for gains, you won't see more than 10-15 HP, but I guess that's something when you're N/A.
